Oliver Prime is back with another release on Oxygen Recordings. Prepare yourselves for a twist on Oliver's deep and acidic style of tech trance that we've heard before...
:: Oliver Prime - I Was A Bee :: Oxygen Recordings :: OX012
A: I Was A Bee (Ambrosia Mix) After a short intro sounding like something you might hear a Jazz band warm up with, the beats of 'I Was A Bee' are introduced. At quite a slow pace, they are soft and deep and somehow present a slight indication of the style of track that is to follow. A very different style of rhythmic percussion comes in - something that is clearly recognisable throughout the track. As the track develops, a soft, rolling bass picks up and becomes the backbone of the production. It never relents, creating an ever driving, onwards rolling feeling. From these moody depths, some subtle melodies are conjured up and play as ghosts in the background. There is also a persistent guitar based 'drone' which plucks out a steady rhythm of notes over and over. This adds to the rolling bass perfectly and creates a really atmospheric situation which slowly pushes you onwards. As the track gets further in, you see how it is a fusion of progressive meets tech because some light and dreamy melodic elements are incorporated into the main flow of things showing a light and dark side to the whole piece. This would be great in a really deep and progressive set, or even towards the start of a techy set. It creates a unique feeling, something compulsive and addictive, as opposed to pumping beats or soaring melodies. Well worth a listen, you will be drawn into it!
B1: I Was A Bee (Pollenflug Interludium) This is a rather short and sweet beginning to the B-side of the vinyl. It's simply a very brief composition by Oliver Prime and Wolfgang Pessentheimer. It's a piece of classic piano music with a few spacey synth parts blended in in a few places. Musically, it's a nice piece of music, plus I'd imagine some DJs out there would see it as a challenge to use it as a tool in their sets!
B2: I Was A Bee (Drone Mix) The Drone Mix of 'I Was A Bee' is recognisably more compliant with today's tech trance. Clean percussion, beats and a thick layer of bass lay the foundations of the track, then some deep and eerie synths fill the melodic void with undulating and bubbling melodies. This track still has a dark and moody feeling, but it also has a slightly sinister edge brought on by some imposing deep chord changes. There's less going on here, but it's a lot more up-beat. Plus, towards the end, you'll also notice the sneaky insertion of some flowing piano scales, which made me think of the Interludium.
Conclusion:
Another thought provoking release from Oliver Prime. This time we see a blend of progressive meets tech trance, plus Oliver's own style which results in some really deep and moody tracks. The Drone Mix on the flip will be a more recognisable sound, but the Ambrosia Remix on the A-side is interesting and compelling enough to draw you in and stick firmly in your mind.
