A new track from Substate begs to be a future anthem whilst Mac Zimms puts in a super techy tribal remix. Whatever flavour you;re after, this one has already seen loads of action from Armin van Buuren, Above & Beyond, Jon O'Bir and Blank & Jones...!
:: Substate - Horizon :: Liquid Recordings :: LQ057
A: Horizon (Original Mix) This is Substate's (an alias of Activa!) debut release on Liquid, and my what a debut it is. This track grabs you on the very first beat. The beats are quite simply some of the strongest and most pounding I've heard in a very, very long time! They make the track instantly energetic and make for a wicked start to the track. The rest of the foundations of this production are also just as solid - the deep, active bass blended with an extra acidic bassline which is reminiscent of Factoria's 'No Escape 2004', are practically perfect addition to the introductory sections of 'Horizon'. There is a smooth and trancey breakdown which sees the introduction and development of a similarly smooth, trancey and delicate melody and this kicks off when the track drops back in (with those awesome, awesome kicks!) to excellent effect. You have a driving track with plenty of energy, but it has a melodic and uplifting element which adds good balance to the production as a whole. Further on, we see another breakdown which this time features a very well executed breakbeat pattern which leads you nicely into the final, full power section of the track. Proper banging trance!
AA: Horizon (Mac Zimms Remix) Mac Zimms provides a totally different sounding interpretation of 'Horizon'. It's deep, progressive and very, very techy with a hint of tribal percussion. This mix is structured so that you get to hear various parts of the track individually before they're all combined in a final showdown type scenario. Firstly we hear the techy, tribal beats, then soon after the percussion gets stronger and is backed by some heftier beats and bass. The final element thrown into the mix is a relatively minimal section with some muted beats and a super-coarse synth which stabs out a rhythm. This all sort of melts into the breakdown which bears the trancey melody we heard in the Original Mix. After that, everything we've heard previously kicks into life. This is quite a tough track, and is definitely one for the real tech-heads out there.
Conclusion:
Another fantastic addition to Liquid's collection of tunes. The Original Mix is simply unmissable due to it's great trancey uplifting sound and also to that totally awesome kick!
