Irish female DJ Mandy Reid brings us her second release on Bonzai, following up on the well-received techy stomper 'Philtre' which was brought out last year. Featuring two originals and an exclusive The Green Martian Remix for 'Philtre', let's see what damage this one can do...
Armandi's first EP included 'Philtre' and 'Pitchblende' and made it to the playlists of jocks like Paul Oakenfold, Paul van Dyk and Marco V. The feel that was being brought forward in these tracks was quite dark and driving, so let's find out if that's what were being treated with here as well...
A1: Distraction (Original Mix) The build of this track immediately oozes a distinctive, rather moody feel with its thick bassdrums, subtly developing layers of driving percussion and some rapid synthwork. The main bassline is one of a kind with its amazingly addictive structure and overall feel, enhancing the track to great extent using constantly changing chords, backed by these wicked beepy kind of sounds to accentuate the darkish atmosphere even more. Sweeping, slightly distorted arrays of synth are the main ingredients during the breakdown, with them crispy computer-like sounds doing their thing again right at the background. A huge amount of tension is being built up to great effect, enabling the climax to become a full-featured dark experience using that superb bassline, well worked out percussion and weird yet entertaining melodies. Great stuff! Rating: 8/10
B1: Philtre (The Green Martian Remix) Laurent Véronnez aka Airwave brings us a remix for Armandi's previous single under his highly accaimed The Green Martian guise. A devastatingly driving build is being ignited right from the start, combining multiple raw, mean sounding synths with a blurry, deep b-line and some wicked percussion. Layer upon layer of badass FX and melodies is being brought in constantly, with the most notable one being a slightly trancy sounding riff featuring well thought out interludes of repeating notes to give the track just that extra bite. This riff's being built out in an immense way during a gigantic breakdown, which brings an astonishing amount of tension with its constantly teasing melodies, filtered effects and blasting percussional elements to induce a climax to be created that will literally blow you out of your shoes. With its dark, driving structure, this is perfect food for the dancefloor! Rating: 8,5/10
B2: Programmed The third track on this release does things a bit differently with its more straight-forward structure and less raw vibe. A bouncy bassline rumbles its way through a somewhat relaxing percussion, backed by more trancy sounding backing melodies and some cool effects. A repeating stabbing melody with a very original sound serves as the main ingredient during the break, slowly maximizing its potential by making friends with a very trancy new riff. While a good amount of energy is being built up during the break, I kind of felt that the climax missed something. It's all rather standard and not too memorable, resulting in a not more than decent B2. Rating: 6,5/10
Conclusion:
'Distraction' and the remix for 'Philtre' are two amazing pieces of raw tech-trance, featuring mean melodies, big basslines and great amounts of energy. 'Programmed' is of a more trancy caliber, but unfortunately doesn't really stand out in my opinion. All in all a more than worthy release!
