Nick Sentience has cooked up a new EP for all of us on RiOT Recordings, who're fast building up a reputation for bringing the industry some of the freshly edged techy sounds around...
:: Nick Sentience - Nick Sentience EP :: RiOT Recordings :: RIOT018
A: Trancender Nick Sentience has been responsible for some very differently styled tracks in the past on a variety of different labels, so I was intrigued to see what his offering on RiOT would consist of. The most immediate thing to say is that 'Trancender' has very identifiable Psy-Trance roots. Psy-Trance is growing in a big way and it's very evident that it's the predominant style in mind for this production. That means the track is fuelled by very strong but immensely punchy beats with a sprinkle of hi-hats and a relentless rolling bassline. The first third of the track is taken up with a slow progression filled with lots of psy-trance style blips, beeps and sfx. As you approach the middle, an ambient element comes in, with smooth pads thickening the sound and expanding the scope of the track so the breakdown can take over for a while. The breakdown here is very long, but eventually culminates in a typical psy-trance buildup which unleashes all the energy its been storing since the very first beat. There's no doubt that it's energetic, uplifting and pumping - thats the nature of psy-trance. But what I like is the fact that even though he's taken the psy-trance route for this track, Nick Sentience has still kept an air of hard trance to his riffs and melodies, which adds so much to this track to make it even more enjoyable.
B: Bring It On Nick goes back to his tough and techy ways for this track. Bigger beats and more percussion are backed by a thick layer of energetic bass, but we can still hear lots of blips and sfx which might be some of that psy-trance still making its way through into this production, which is quite interesting. The buildup here is quite standard - tough beats all the way to the breakdown, which introduces and builds up a lead synth. Then we see the inevitable eruption into the main section. All pretty standard stuff it might be, but it sounds totally awesome. The lead synth is totally unique and drives the track, along with some unrelenting bass, superbly! It's one of those tunes that suddenly goes from being fairly 'normal' into something totally immense all in the quick turn of a breakdown. This is just pure tough, techy and energetic goodness!
Conclusion:
A fresh and varied EP, made so by the psy-trance styled track on the A-side. the B-side, however, is where it's at. the awesome lead synth and the techy, driving nature of the production makes it a surefire winner!
