Just out is the Woodsman's latest tech-trance offering, being another genre-bending floorfiller which has been hyped by Marco V, Tiësto and Eddie Halliwell for quite a while now. This is totally different than earlier Woods records, so head in to find out what we're dealing with here.

'Advanced' made quite the impact on last year's scene, with its uberinfectious hooks and instantly recognizable structure. It became the official Trance Energy 2006 anthem back in February and it's still being played by lots and lots of jocks as we speak.
Reviewed here is the follow-up, which luckily isn't a simple clone of his earlier work, but more like something completely different...

A-side: Original Mix
The title says it all. In a merely positive way, that is. This tune's all about constant builds of tension, a wagonload of wicked gimmicks and an uncomplicated yet amazingly energetic, floordestroying stabbing riff. During its first parts, it thrusts onwards using just a bit of thin percussion, which slowly but steadily builds itself out just until that badass, amazingly raw piece of cracking synth comes in. Suddenly, the tune bursts out to the max by torpeding in arrays of harsh percussion combined with that roofblowing riff. If this doesn't get people moving, nothing will! The structure of the track is also quite something: although it does rely on the hook most of the time, a lot of variation has been kept in there by constantly bringing in crazy sound effects and multiple tiny breaks to keep its rooflifting potential at its maximum level. This is one hell of a wicked tune, showing that Woods always knows how to keep his productions fresh and innovating. Two thumbs up!

B-side: Dub Mix
This one's slightly less straight-forward than it's A-side companion. While it does include a lot of the elements we heard in the original, in some way it's deeper and perhaps even slightly harsher. Mysterious vocal snips, a massively deep bassline and sinister synth interludes make up a bit of the build, with that amazing main hook coming in eventually. This time around, it's comprised of a somewhat sharper, more noticeable overall sound, phattening up the tune a bit. In some way though, I think that (inspite of the thicker basses) this one won't work as well on the floor as the original. It's just a bit too complex, while the A-side works out so well because of it's sheer uncomplicated structure.

Conclusion:
Marcel Woods is constantly reshaping the meaning of the word techtrance. 'Monotone' is a superbly fierce bit of cracking music, inhabiting the ability to blow up any selfrespecting dancefloor in seconds. Go get this now!
