Just released on the ever consistent High Contrast label is the follow-up to last year's massive 'India'. The vinyl release includes two mixes by Jochen himself plus an interpretation by man of the moment Alex M.O.R.P.H....
'India' came in two mixes, an original and a Miller Dub. The second one was a more tech-flavoured, bassy version which had the ability to turn dancefloors upside down in a matter of minutes. The same formula has been chosen for the release that's being reviewed here, apart from the fact that a third mix by German trance maestro Alex M.O.R.P.H. has been included...
A-side: Emporium Mix This mix got its name from the Emporium festival that was held on May 20th. 'Chromatic' became the party's official anthem, which definitely fits in with the overall style this tune has been produced in. It blends loads of sweet, stabby melodies, typical Miller-styled pumping percussion and some really thick layers of bass to create a very dense feel throughout the tune's first parts. Melodies are continuously erupting behind its main embodiment, all merging together eventually during the break. The anthem-feel is being accentuated to the max here by throwing in infectious, smooth and above all stabby rhythms, which are being accompanied by a slick, beepy melody to top things off. Overall, a slightly tech-like feel is being created by pumping out them stabby melodies, but on the other hand everything does retain a very elevating feel. This is a wicked, driving trancer filled with a good amount of bass and an array of nicely crafted melodies.
B1: Miller Dub As can be expected from a Dub, this one's darker, meaner and has a slighly more clubby feel coming with it compared with the Emporium Mix. A sinister, deep b-line grinds its way throughout the foundation of the tune, with subtle hints to tiny melodies emerging every now and then. Instead of on melodic treatments, the emphasis has been put on that thorough bassline and its accompanying FX during the build. One of the warm, cozy melodies from the A-side features during the breakdown, building and building just until that massively raw bassline re-enters and takes over control furiously. Subtle, distorted bits of melody are being thrown in and out of the tune, making this a very cool track to get your floor going in no-time!
B2: Alex M.O.R.P.H. Remix The man who might be Germany's biggest trance export as of late offers us his remix as well. Mister M.O.R.P.H. is known for his high energy, totally elevating trance, and that's exactly what wer're being served here. Meaty, thrusting percussion backed by a bubbly set of basses are the main ingredients, driving the tune onwards combined with throttling, rapid synthwork, constant hints to one of the original's riffs and a well worked out drive. Alex has added some new melodies on top to keep things varied, which works out quite nicely combined with the chords we heard before. The breakdown is a carbon copy of one of the other mixes at first sight, but the good thing here is that the new riff from the build returns in its fullest form, backed with some wicked breakbeats. It builds itself out to become this utterly delicate, superbly uplifting riff, slowly but smoothly waving over the rest of the tune's body. It's good that Alex implemented a totally new riff here, else this remix would have been a tad too standard I think. Anyways, the power and highly melodic intermezzo's that this remix encompasses make it more than worthy.
Conclusion:
While 'Chromatic' can't top 'India' in my opinion, it is a very well worked out trancer. The melody-heads among you will prefer the Emporium and Alex M.O.R.P.H. mixes, while the people with the slighly deeper & darker mood should go for the Dub. Another quality release on HCR!
