The latest incarnation of Tiesto's In Search Of Sunrise series attempts to draw you in even before you've opened the CD case. The sunkissed imagery on the from of the album is as captivating as the music itself. The theme here is 'Los Angeles', the reason behind this name is because this is where Tiesto mixed the album and where he has been spending most of his time away from the DJ circuit, mixing and producing with the legendary Brian Transeau.
The first CD of this double disc set is a smooth mixture of deep, mostly trancey tracks with a slight hint of something a little more housey at times. It's interesting to see these kinds of sounds being blended together - it definitely works and it really does fit the theme implied by the title. The other main style we can hear is a vocal style. A great deal of the tracks on this 1st CD are vocally driven, but you can tell that they have all been selected very carefully in order to avoid any cheesiness and to enhance the deep and mellow ambiance which is clearly being aimed for on this opening disc.
Especially beautiful here is Conil - Malibu Beach (and its awesome, chilled out introductory sequence, wow!), the haunting yet blissful vocals of Late Night Alumni - Empty Streets, the chunky and synthy delights of Leama & Moor - Everything Matters (included on their own forthcoming artist album) and the delicately trancey Mark Otten Remix of Kalafut & Fygle - Novocaine.
The second CD retains the deep and delicious sound, but makes a notable switch away from the vocal element which was rinsed during the first CD. Instead, Tiesto takes us on a journey which has more drive to it. Not the banging powerful drive of tech trance, for example, but a smooth, deep and ongoing drive which feeds off the subtle melodies hidden within the tracks and their addictive progressions. As it nears the end, CD2 quite welcomely develops a more trancey edge to it.
Track highlights here include the enveloping sounds of Alex Stealthy - Something Is Wrong, the dark and eerie 'Green Astronauts' by A Boy Called Joni, and a duo of Anjunabeats tracks in the form of Smith & Pledger's Aspekt project's 'Hi Jack' and Super8 + DJ Tab's classy 'Helsinki Scorchin''.
Conclusion:
Overall, this album oozes quality. There's not one bad track in the playlist and the mixing is generally spot on. Afterall what would you expect from Tiesto? The whole flavour and direction of this compilation, along with the style of music incorporated within, may not have been what some people might have perhaps expected, but then if everything was so easy to predict, where would the excitement and enjoyment in the world be? Simply put, another landmark album in terms of Tiesto and the ISOS series. Highly recommended.
