Trance duo Danjo & Rob Styles go head to head against fellow DJ/producer DJ Governor to produce Captivating Sounds' latest release: the Forest EP...
:: DJ Danjo & Rob Styles Vs. DJ Governor - Forest EP :: Captivating Sounds :: CVSA033
A: Red Woods The 'Red Woods' incarnation of this release takes its time and does a long job of establishing itself, but once it does, it's bowling along nicely with good lively percussion and a soft, flowing bassline. The is some really nice work done with string pads which play long, beautiful notes in an ongoing process of broadening the track and filling it up with luscious sounds. The masterstroke here, as it usually does, comes as we enter the breakdown. The melody that emerges is compelling, mysterious and most of all, it is of decent length. It has its own mini progression if you like and benefits from being ever so slightly more complex than a lot of the lead melodies you hear nowadays. Basically, what you have when everything drops back in with the bass flowing, percussion jittering and synths pouring out that melody, is an engrossing piece of melodic trance which captivates the mind which is something not many tracks achieve.
B: Blue Woods 'Blue Woods' is comprised of 'tighter' sounds. There is less bass and more nippy and rigid synthwork. We still get the benefits of luxurious trancey pads in the background. The main differences here are how the 'main' melody heard before is used before the central breakdown and is also played by a much more subdued instrument, the breakbeats that are introduced during the breakdown and the sudden transformation into a stabbed synth affair after the breakdown. It's an interesting change - there is a dominating synth hookline, everything has a slightly more techy edge and there is a much more noticeable drive because the track now has a 'spring' in its step. We also get to hear the lovely melody again, albeit in the background. Due to all of this action being fitted into one track, it weighs in at a mighty 9:07.
Conclusion:
A great EP from Danjo, Styles and DJ Governor. The basis and common ground shared between the two tracks has to be that quality melody, which is fantastic. 'Blue Woods' goes for a massive array of trancey variety whilst 'Red Woods' focuses primarily on the beautiful, main melody. Excellent stuff!
