Cliff Coenraad, aka Astatic comes in with his debut on the Dedicated imprint with a double release of tranced up techiness...
:: Astatic - Cascada / Hollow Man :: Dedicated :: DED024
A: Hollow Man 'Hollow Man' is a very techy track which sports a light and housey sounding bassline. The percussion has a small impact as most attention is focussed onto the housey bass. The synths used here, especially after things have warmed up and are properly in motion, have a sort of raw sound and feel to them and they tend to drone a little bit as the track gets on. The style is downright and dirty tech overall, with the synths pushing out a rhythm most of the way through. This one lacks some excitement so would probably appeal most to those who live, breath and die by tech.
A: Cascada The style of this track is also quite different to the usual trancey sounds that we're used to hearing from Dedicated. Instead, 'Cascada' kicks off with a beefy, quite daunting beat backed up by some very rhythmic percussion (which reminds me of a techno track called 'In The Bronx'). Soon the bassline is faded in and it immediately changes the tone because it has a really cool, funky and groovy edge to it. The final touch comes from a coarse synth which plays a short repetitive hook in rhythmic stabs, which really livens up the track and keeps things energetic. Once the breakdown has let you breathe, you're really made to feel the sheer grooviness of things when the track kicks back in. Indeed, most of this production's power comes from the three important and distinct elements: the coarse synth, the dirty beats and that totally groovy bassline. You won't be able to keep still, guaranteed!
Conclusion:
A vinyl of two rather differing sides. 'Hollow Man' doesn't quite do it, but 'Cascada' easily makes up for it with its drive and groovy bass and will have you dancing the night away in no time.
