The second release on one of Recover's latest offshoots is a disc containing two mixes of different tunes by Jezper Söderlund under his Airbase and Parc guises. One is main room trance and one is of a somewhat darker affair, so there's something for everyone on here...
Discover Digital is actually one of the many sublabels of the Recover family. Its first release was John O'Callaghan's 'Chameleon', and this time around we're offered a slick remix disc featuring two brand new remixes by Sweden-based producer Jezper Söderlund.
A-side: Narthex - Bully (Parc Mix) Parc is the alias Jezper uses for his somewhat darker, more experimental trance gems, and that's exactly what we're being served with here. A sinister use of smooth soundscapes filled with crisp, well worked out percussion, a deep subtle bassline and wickedly crafted mysterious SFX makes it's way into the classy build, with one interesting side-note being that there's a minimal amount of melody being used during these parts. All this is totally made up for during the breakdown: an again dark, gloomy sounding yet very elevating, rapid main hook takes you on a ride here, building itself out to become one with the wicked percussion. It's slightly thin, mysterious feel works out a treat combined with them neat percs. Speed this one up a tiny bit and you've got yourself a peaktime trancer!
AA-side: O'Callaghan & Kearney - Restricted Motion (Airbase Mix) Last year, Airbase's remix of Kenny Hayes' 'Daybreaker' saw the light of day, being a massively energetic piece of modern trance. The remix for 'Restricted Motion' reviewed here is quite similar in style, with its fast-paced beats, thick, superbly well rolling basslines and a use of percussion that gives the track a great drive. A swift use of multiple classy backing melodies and some very well put chord changes give the tune an even greater pace, fueled onwards by that bubbling, very present bassline. One of the great things about this remix is that the main riff flows directly out of the build: no endless breakdowns or whatsoever, just straight-on bringing in the melody in full force, building up to become one monster of a hook. This is elevating to the max! It powers up more and more, just until the percs bang back in for the full frenzy to commence. If you were wondering what exactly uplifting trance was again, go listen to this and you'll instantly remember. One hell of a tune!
Conclusion:
Mister Söderlund has done a great job on both these remixes. The remix for 'Bully' on side A sports a dark feel backed with that very cool melody, while Airbase's interpretation of 'Restricted Motion' is all about sheer upliftingness. Some may say it's rather formulaic, but just shut them up by letting them hear the tune at a loud volume. Succes guaranteed!
