This release of London based Boombox Records is quite different then the other releases on this breakbeat label. Read on to check out what’s so special..
As Don Diablo is very known of his cross-over touch on his tunes, it seems that Boombox is also infected with the cross-over virus by signing something whole different then breakbeat on their label. On this release Don fills the A-side with an electrohouse stormer while Audio Support Unit provides a breaks mix.
A1) Don Diablo- Down The Drain
The tune starts smoothly with some nice FX and probably Don himself providing some minimal lyrics. Then a grinding bassline starts in, goes many octaves up, falls down again and with a fat drive the beat is being introduced. Together with the bassline which is now changed in a simple, but effective riff which reminds me of some older work by guys like Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso. In the middle of the tune the bassline goes up some octaves and falls down again, just like in the beginning, but now an electric guitar plays together with the bassline what should have a great effect on the dancefloor. Meanwhile the minimalistic vocals provide a cool underground atmosphere. Towards the end of the track the bassline goes up some octaves again, falls down and introduces the end of the track by ending smoothly just like the track begun.
B1) Don Diablo- Down The Drain (Audio Support Unit Remix)
The guys of Audio Support Unit keep the original Boombox spirit alive and present a tech-orientated breakbeat remix. This mix begins very laidback with some nice sample use of the original bassline. Also in this mix the Audio Support Unit guys got a hold on the pitching trick on with bassline, but here the track doesn’t explode but goes on in the laidback feel the track already had. As that laidback feel goes on till the end it's certainly not the most spectacular track. Next to that Down The Drain certainly deserved a more energetic breakbeat remix in my opinion as Don's version just screams energy out. A positive point of Audio Support Unit's interpretation is that it gives the release a great variety.
Conclusion:
Don Diablo’s own mix of Down The Drain is ready to set the clubs on fire with it’s explosive moments and great basslines. The guys of Audio Support Unit made a nice remix, but although the guys did some great samplework the remix is just not that spectacular and seems to be a good option to build up your set with.
