This album immediately tells it like it is. On offer are thirty four slabs of prime RiOT! action mixed by BK and Ed Real. In this massive list you will find new and unreleased tracks as well as classic RiOT! anthems from Lisa Lashes, James Lawson, Vinylgroover & the Red Hed, BK, Azure & Serge, Yomanda, Deadbeat, Ed Real, Nick Sentience and many more.
RiOT have been simmering away for some time now, offering up a list of decent tracks, mostly bordering on the harder side of things, but they all seem to have a distinct edge to them. The sound is crossed somewhere between a mixture of techno and hard dance resulting in tough and compelling beats which also show off a hard trancey vibe and have also dabbled deeper into the world of techno and a little bit into psy-trance also. Basically the sound is pretty much kick-ass and it's all laid out for you over these two CDs.
CD1 sees BK mix up 19 tracks, starting off with the pretty steady funky vibes of a few tunes by Black Russian. Things soon toughen up and the CD soon takes on a hard dance sound, as you'd expect from BK really. The thing is, because this CD has a whole lot of tracks packed in from the RiOT stables, the general jist of things changes every now and again and by track 11 you're listening to something much more akin to tough trance than anything else. This is one of the things that makes RiOT such a strong label - its subtle diversity. By the end of the first CD, though, BK has stepped things up into proper hard dance territory and the beats and riffs just come pumping out. Track highlights here include BK's 'Rhythm Break', 'Unfinished Sympathy' from BK, Vinylgroover & Red Hed, Mark Sherry's 'Fractured' and the Tough Dub of BK's 'Playing With Knives'.
CD2 is Ed Real's turn. This second CD sports a lot more of RiOT's newer material, and Ed Real takes things in a mostly techno based direction, toughening up the sound and really rinsing some dirty beats. It does kick off with some more trancey tracks though, and finishes in hard dance style of course. Highlights on this one include some awesome tracks such as Nick Sentience's 'Beckers', Jamie Taylor & Will Gold - The Bronx and 'Mummy' by Eden Project.
Conclusion:
Overall, a top notch compilation! The CDs basically stay tough and driving throughout, chopping and changing through sub-genres to keep you guessing. The mixing, of course, is spot on, and we see some quick transitions in places which keeps things fresh and also allows for more tracks to be included.
A fantastic album and anyone who has ever heard just one tune from RiOT and liked it should take a serious look at it.
