The latest release on the well established Maelstrom imprint is a vocal bit of trance by Mr. Sam. Singing out in this remixes release is trance vocalist Kirsty Hawkshaw, to the remixes by T4L and Airaforce...
:: Mr. Sam Feat Kirsty Hawkshaw - Insight :: Maelstrom :: MAELTX047
1) Insight (T4L Remix) T4L's remix of 'Insight' weighs in at a hefty 9 minutes and 31 seconds long. The reason behind this is that this track is a steady, well progressed and safe journey through the rather dangerous territory that is vocal trance. The track takes it's time to get into top gear, slowly building a full, strong sound. The vocal heavy breakdown sections - which are rather nice, I must add; lots of gentle, very well sung high pitched vocals - are balanced well by long, trancey sections featuring some rather lovely synth pads which line the background and make some great chord changes, giving a very trancey experience indeed. Even within the vocal section, these are also balanced by some lead synths, so you aren't over-loaded with vocals. There's also a lot of vocal sfx work too, where you see the vocals being reverbed, twisted and generally played with in order to enhance the whole experience. The main breakdown in the middle of the track is long and quite powerful and it gives way to an excellent main section where T4L clearly demonstrates their quality production skills. Really good vocal trance here.
2) Insight (Airaforce Remix) On the flip is a remix by relative newcomers Airaforce. It seems as though they are trying to build a repertoire which shows off their own particular style, because this remix has a very similar feel and sound to one of Airaforce's recent releases on Conspiracy Recordings Limited - 'No-one knows'. The sound is quite driving, with really heavy beats, very in your face and heavy bass and a kind of pulsing lead synth which has a pure trancey sound but which also sports a lot of drive too. This is well suited because the whole track itself is a good few BPM faster than the T4L Remix. The vocal element here is a lot smaller, with most of the main focus going onto that trancey, driving feel and sound. The vocals are used throughout very well in sfx form, with meandering and echoed words being blended into the track. We hear them play their biggest part most clearly in the breakdown, which is to be expected. A solid track and another which should help in getting Airaforce well onto the trance world's map.
Conclusion:
A top release on Maelstrom. The remix quality here on both sides is top notch. the A sports a vocally focused piece of trance whilst Airaforce goes for a more direct and driving trancey approach, cutting back on heavy vocal usage. Great record!
