Quality digital trance label E-TCR hits us with a bumper release. The 'Inner Peace EP' boasts two tracks; 'Inner Peace' and 'Out Of Silence', each of which comes in three trancey flavours. Read on...
:: Mark Thornton - Inner Peace EP :: E-TCR :: ETCR009CD
*Please note that the tracks listed below are out of the order that they appear on the CD, so as to retain some structure to the review. They still sport their actual track number as they appear on the CD*
5) Inner Peace (Original Mix) To kick off this sizable EP, I'll start with the Original Mix of the title track, 'Inner Peace'. A relatively slowly paced trancer, it weighs in at about 133BPM and is one second shy of being 9 minutes long! The light intro to this track gets things under way, using light and gentle synths, a kind of funky sounding bassline and smooth luscious pads. There is an early breakdown which is used to actually introduce the main body of the track instead of being a highlighted centrepiece. This lovely breakdown really brought a smile to my face and reminded me just why I love trance so much. We hear echoed voices singing and the pads play out some inspiring chord changes to melt the heart. Things kick off a bit more after this, allowing the gentle synths to create more of a melodic feel and also allowing the pads to really let those chord changes sink in. There is another breakdown which is maintained with a very light breakbeat, and then things are brought back in for one final round of beautiful, flowing sound. This track is excellently produced and you can tell that it is very thought out. Quality, chilled down trance.
2) Inner Peace (Sunquest 138BPM Remix) Sunquest spices things up with a remix that's paced up to 138BPM. You can immediately hear and feel the sounds of the Original Mix and at this increased speed it works very well. The bassline has been tarted up, now it has more drive, playing quick notes on top of each beat and is accompanied by a thick layer of constant, underlying bass. Some smooth, trancey synths play out the hook we heard before in the Original Mix, but there's more strength and energy here than the previous light and gentle approach. The breakdown is calm and ambient, with female voices echoing out amongst a plucked guitar driven melody. Again, this is really beautiful stuff. The main track suddenly drops back in with a surge of energy - a great moment - and the sound is brilliant. The constant synths raise the tune up and suspend it at a point of constant and flowing euphoria. Two tracks in and two thumbs up - I think you can see where this is going...
6) Inner Peace (Sunquest (132BPM Remix) Here, Sunquest basically take their 138BPM Remix and pace it down to 132BPM. The structure and sounds are all just about the same here, although this track still works at this reduction of pace. An extra bit of variety so this track can still be made good use of in calmer trance sets.
4) Out Of Silence (Original Mix) Moving on to 'Out Of Silence', we hear quite a change in style. The first impressions are that it is quite progressive in style, with long, echoed pads, smooth synths and lots of little sounds and sfx echoing in and out of the soundscape. The chord changes are again a main focal point in this second song on this EP. They're slow, deliberate, full of emotion and they sound awesome. There is also quite an emotive vocal element to this track too. They are used sparingly during the breakdown and to very good effect. One long breakdown later and things kick back in revealing how the rest of the production is going to pan out. It is mainly a sea of fairly high pitched synths and pads, allowing a meandering melody to wander around the soundscape and create a generally relaxed air about the track.
1) Out Of Silence (Skyform Vs. Spiral Motion Remix) Heading the CD at track position 1 is the Skyform Vs. SPiral Motion Remix of 'Out Of Silence'. There's a total change of track character here - the beat is punchy and powerful, and a wave of synth and bass surges into the foreground quite quickly creating a foundation which is energetic and bubbly. One of the main elements here is a piano (I love pianos!) which plays a classic combination of single notes and chords. It's a marriage made in heaven really, because this blend of sound and instruments is just fantastic. The breakdown is where we see those emotional chord changes come into play and they make the track as strong as ever, especially when the beat kicks back in and the piano is joined with some utterly trancey synths, pushing out the great lead melody sky high into the soundscape.
3) Out Of Silence (Andy Bagguley Remix) And last on this CD, but by no means the least, comes Andy Bagguley with his remix of 'Out Of Silence'. The focus here is on a deep, and gentle tip. There is a smaller bass element, with some really subtle and gentle synths tappnig out the melody. The whole lot is embedded on a soft bed of brilliantly soft and smooth pads which blend into each other deliciously as the chords change. After the breakdown, the lead melody is introduced. This remix focuses on the deep sound and styles itself in a steady progression of change instead of sporting the immediate trancey energy of some of the other mixes.
Conclusion:
To sum it all up, this CD is brilliant! You have two great tracks and three absolutely spot on mixes of each to choose from. Some of them will make for a very difficult choice because they're all just so good. As always, triumphant results from E-TCR. Proper summer anthem material.
