When two big names in Trance put together two mixes on an unknown record curiosity just shouts at you to go take a listen to it. With mixes from Airwave and Jam X & DeLeon this unknown record from Hypnosis is destined for good things.
A1 :: Airwave Remix B1 :: Jam X & DeLeon’s Retro Mix
Having never heard of an artist is usually a good thing because you never know what to expect. I’m only aware of the one previous release under the name Hypnosis but can’t say its one that itches at me to listen to. Airwave needs no introduction. He’s one of the biggest faces on the Trance scene and has been releasing records and albums for years now. Jam X and DeLeon became more widely known when they released Can You Dig It a few years back but they have been release very good records for years now to.
Let’s start by having a look at the Airwave mix. The track starts off with a good tough but soft sounding beat with hats and symbols leading the intro. They cut back as the beat becomes clearer and a neat melody creeps in building the track up. Everything stops and a sound that winds itself up like a coil and fades away. As that fizzles out the main hook feeds in. Light electric sounding strings come flying in with I think one of the original sounding hooks I’ve heard for a while. Typical Airwave style sounds found in this. Filtered in and out effects on the melody give the track atmosphere and depth. It’s a very nice bit of production work.
Jam X and DeLeon, I’ve not heard anything from them for a fair while as I remember. What can be found in this one that stands out. The track starts with a nice backing bass beat and a chug along rhythm with deep bass changes in the background before the rhythm winds itself up and the beats cut back. A few tribal musical instrument sounding beats build up in the melody. The format of it is the same as Airwave used but the string changes seem to me that little more uplifting and clear. It’s one that sticks in you head this. The melody drops out and track builds in a catchy sounding whistle type effected string that signals the end of the euphoria. It’s a nice ending to slam in another track when mixing for sure.
Conclusion:
On my first play of this I have to say the Jam X & DeLeon mix stood out to me to be the better of the two mixes. It skips along a bit quicker than the Airwave style and when the main hook introduces itself you wonder where it came from. On closer inspection of the Airwave mix you effects used on the hook are really uplifting and well worked. A record from an artist I’ve never heard of to be honest but mixes well worth spending the time to listen to.
