The FiveAM label has been stepping up a few gears as of late, so check out this neat pair of tracks - the result of a collaboration between producers Gareth Emery and Nicholas Bennison...
:: Gareth Emery & Nicholas Bennison - Interlok

A: Interlok (Original Mix)
This track kicks off in a percussive style. Some rolling beats, nippy percussion and easy going bass pave the way and set the scene for the rest of the production. You notice after a few minutes that the bassline and combinations of bassy synths actually have quite a funky edge and it's at this point that a short and simple set of synth notes is applied. The result is something funky, groovy and addictive which most should find very pleasing to listen to. After the breakdown, the track takes a turn towards the more energetic side of things - a much stronger synthline is developed and introduced with much stronger trancey roots. It's still kind of twisted and funky though and will definitely create some activity on the dancefloor. An inetresting track comprised of two nicely matched but yet quite contrasting portions.
B: Interlok (Gaz's Dubbed Out Mix)
This mix of 'Interlok' is quite intriguing because at first listen, you'd be forgiven for thinking it's identical to its A-side counterpart. The first half is actually very very similar, with just a few tweaks to alter the sound of some of the instruments. On the whole it has a crisper sound. The main differences are that there is a small variation in the use of the short and simple synth which works very well and I think would've been very suited for use in the Original Mix itself. The 'dubbed out' part of the track's name becomes clear after the breakdown. The synth is gone and instead there is a much heavier emphasis on the funky, groovy bassline. Plus, there is a weird kind of heavily muted synth which stabs out some rhythmic sounds and acts more in the background than as a lead instrument.
Conclusion:
An interesting release from Gareth Emery and Nicholas Bennison. The Dubbed Out Mix is one for the progressive people while the Original Mix has a very trancey twist after the breakdown and so I think will be the most popular of the two.
