Alter Ego is progressing with leaps and bounds lately. Their fourth release continues the run of quality release we've seen so far from this very promising trance imprint...
Kenneth Thomas is back with another release on Alter Ego after kicking the label off with it's first release earlier in the year.
:: Kenneth Thomas Feat. Colleen Riley - Ghost In The Machine :: Alter Ego Records :: AE004
1) Ghost In The Machine (Mike Shiver's Catching Sun Dub) Mike Shiver has cooked up a remix in his Catching Sun style. This style is quite laid back and very dreamy with lots of gentle, ghostly melodies and some subtle synthwork entwined into the background. Since this is a dub version, the lyrics are fairly sparse and I think they work better in this way, with only a few select samples making the cut. They've been sampled and heavily reverbed/echoed, making them sound all nice and ghostly, which is fitting to the track's title. The breakdown is rolled up with a smooth and energy building build up and this effortlessly lets the track assume full strength so we can hear the beautiful blends of synths and melodies which really come into good effect in these final sections. Very high quality trance.
2) Ghost In The Machine (Abbott & Chambers Remix) Abbott & Chambers provide a remix which sounds and feels more upbeat and a bit more driving, due to the use of a stronger beat and more energetic and rounded bassline. In this remix, you get to hear just about all of the vocals too. They seem quite strange at first and are almost melodically spoken, as opposed to being sung fully. The lyrics themselves sound idyllic and don't interact rhythmically with the rest of the track, instead they take on a more independent riole in the track, which is a very interesting effect overall and works well, especially after a few listens. What you do notice about the vocals though, is that, especially during the breakdown, the last part of the "...ghost in the machine?" lyrics actually blend harmonically with the synths and this is capitalised on wonderfully when the track kicks back in and the vocals become more melodic and extremely uplifting. This uplifting feeling is amplified by the synth pads which had been carefully and rather cunningly built up in the background. Top marks for this remix - it's really uplifting and great to listen to, plus it's something a little bit different which has worked out brilliantly!
3) Ghost In The Machine (Elevation Remix) Elevation put in a slower, chunkier sounding remix. It is very progressive in style and takes its time to build up into something full and flowing. You hear the strongest parts of the track after a rather ambient and ghostly breakdown. Even though the actual track itself remains calm with just a few synths pulsing in the background and a few layered pads over the top, a lot of its energy comes from the lyrics which are sung out with strength and really are made to be the highlight and focal point of the production. Quite calm and proggy overall, but the vocals shine through again to make this into a very strong track.
Conclusion:
Top quality release here. Flavours for all tastes really. The best mixes, in my opinion, are the ones mentioned above. Mike Shiver's Catching Sun Dub (there is a full vocal version) is soft and trancey and makes great use of the vocals included, Abbott & Chambers provide a truly uplifting piece of pretty much vocal trance without it sounding at all cheesey or commercial and finally Elevation (there is also a Dub Remix of this) provides a progressive take on things which too works out really well.
