John '00' Fleming's label brings us a release by a producer from Moscow, Russia, who delivers a deep, dark trancer with some psy'ish influences to top it off. The Digital Blonde is on remix duties this time around, so let's see what we're dealing with here...
The name Anton Chernikov hasn't appeared a lot in today's trance scene, but he ís responsible for some works you might know of. He's released an EP under his Nile alias on Somatic Sense last year, as well as a tune called 'Isis' which was brought out just last month on iRecords. Judging from JOOF's website, the lads overthere seem to be in full joy about this tune, so expectations are high...
A-side: Original Mix 'Evil Spice', as the title implies, is a dark, raw sounding tune. It blends eerie sfx, a thomping bit of percussion and a fierce meaty bassline to a great extent, led on by wicked mysteriously crafted synth, repeatingly teasing backing chords and a good drive to get things going during the build. The style could be typified as somewhat deeper, darker trance with some psy twists, especially when noticing the constantly eminent rhythms that are present during the full build. The breakdown commences smoothly and is really beyond words: a beautiful pan-flute starts playing this wonderful little melody, backed with tribal drums to create a feel that in some way contrasts with the rest of the tune, but in another way fits in like a charm. Bits of bass and synth are smoothly gliding onwards here, subtly building themselves up to become a mean as hell, tech-influenced beast of a riff which is sure to blow up every dancefloor in a matter of seconds. The overall feel in this track is just so wicked, you definitely have to experience it yourself to understand. Very good stuff! Rating: 8,5/10
B-side: The Digital Blonde Remix JOOF-resident Rikki Smith aka The Digital Blonde steps up to provide his remix on this release. Hot on the heels of his widely recognized 'Synthology' album, Rikki has made a remix in his typical sound, consisting of that slightly thin use of percussion, wagonloads of psy-influenced FX and a rapid drive. Bits of the original's melodies are being implemented in a very good way, smoothly fitting in with the overall dark-ish sound that is being brought forward in this remix. Melodies are bumping in and out of the tune using filter-like tricks constantly, backed with them very recognizable arrays of strings to top things off. The amazing flute has been kept intact in the break, this time consisting of a slightly higher, more elevating sound. Rikki has removed the techy bit and instead lets the full melody from the breakdown play on top of the well-structured rest of the track, which definitely serves as a great addition to the original's take on things. All the wicked synths do their work flawlessly, resulting in a remix that is certainly a great extra on this already highly above par release. Rating: 8/10
Conclusion:
JOOF once again show that they have it in them to sign tracks that are different from your usual contemporary trance, yet still keep you entertained all the time because of all the inventiveness that's been put into them. 'Evil Spice' is no exception: the original blends that beautiful melody with a techy, dark rest of the track, while The Digital Blonde's interpretation goes on in Rikki's recognizable style to deliver a great addition to the original. A brilliant release!
