Tech trance prodigy Leon Bolier dons his Precursor alias for this deep, dark and downright dirty 2 tracker of a tech EP...
:: Leon Bolier Pres. Precursor - The Journey / The Navigator :: 2 Play :: 2PLAY015
A: The Journey 'The Journey' begins with a thudding and punchy beat backed up with sharp and crisp percussion which is always a strong indication that a very techy styled track is brewing. Initially the bass consists of a very rigid set of bassy notes backed up with a deep and bubbly sub-bass line. Coarse synths begin to get more and more prominent, acting more like sfx than hooky little leads. The are brought into the foreground during the breakdown which eventually calms down into a soundscape of synth pads with a 'big' concert like feel to them. When the track drops back in, it is driven by the synth leads we heard earlier and the strong, beefy kicks. The synth element is heavily reverbed and this gives the track a strong overall 'big room' feeling and a great sense of epicness, which is quite fitting for a track entitled 'The Journey'. This productions is cleverly split into distinct sections - the start is dirty and very in your face, getting your attention and holding it with string, rigid sounds. After the breakdown, there is a sense of expansion - the 'melodic' hooks are now used to lead the track and once this section has passed, the track has an air of completeness about it.
AA: The Navigator This is a rather minimal tune. Again big, thumping and punchy beats are coupled with tight and crisp percussion which really over-emphasises the techy nature of the sound. The bass element is a booming rhythmic loop and although is quite simple without much to it, it does a great job of leading the track. Throughout the production, there are vocal snippets mixed in with the strong techy beats, percussion and sfx. After the break, the track tacks an interesting turn as a deep, very electr sounding synth is used to play a rhythm and also some rough, industrial synths play heavily rhythmic leading parts. 'The Navigator' is a very different style of track which uses a lot of sounds you might not be used to hearing. An interesting track which finds new niches in the tech trance genre and mixes them up with a hint of electro.
Conclusion:
Overall an interesting set of tracks. 'The Journey' leans more towards the tech trance we are used to, and it has that great epic sense to it. 'The Navigator' is minimal and quite unique, merging rough techy influences with a hint of electro toward the end. The pair of tunes would be great for hardening a softer set or conversely, softening a harder set. Well worth a listen.
