DeepBlue bring us the second release on their international imprint, being a track by a new producer hailing from Moscow, Russia. This one's been getting support from Armin van Buuren and Ferry Corsten and comes in three mixes...
Alexey Selin already appeared as a remixer on the release of Adam Nickey's 'Perfect Destiny', with his mix gaining support on A State Of Trance and in numerous sets. His first solo single contains three mixes: one by Alexey himself, another by D-Air and a third by Lev Adamov aka Update Project.
A-side: Original Mix Alexey's original mix of 'White Crystal' is a very soulful, inventive trancer filled with crisp bits of percussion, a deep groovy bassline that shifts through the track like a madman and a great build packed with well arranged melodies. It's trance, but definitely not your everyday stuff: instead, it does things differently by using that wicked bassline to get you hooked immediately and steadily building out the main lead part by part during the build and break. It's a beautifully crafted lead; note by note, it progresses to become a very smooth, silky affair, gearing up the tension during the breakdown quite thoughtfully. Just when you thought the tune would just go on using this same riff, a big climax is being initiated by using a very classy, stabbing riff playing that calm, restfull emotive melody over and over again. Top class trance! Rating: 8,5/10
B1: D-Air Remix The first remixer brings a more typical trance interpretation, filled with contemporary sounding melodies, thumpy beats and rolling b-lines. I like the way in which the melody from the original has been implemented during the build: multiple sharp synths do their thing in a nice way, bringing forward parts of the lead we know by now. The breakdown, though, is a miss. The power of the main melody is its sheer ability to relax and create a laidback vibe, but D-Air have done it the other way around and bring in an energetic sounding mega-riff which just doesn't do the melody justice. This remix is neatly produced, but can't measure with the original at all. Rating: 6,5/10
B2: Update Project Ambient Mix No beats in this one, as you might have already noticed from the title. This is one hell of an addition to the release: beautiful soundscapes filled with atmospheric sound effects, bassy string interludes and slowly building yet very strong chord progression are the main ingredients here, altogether creating a slightly mysterious vibe. The amazing main melody returns in a proper way by using a classy guitar-ish touch, lifting you up to the highest regions in no time. Some very elaborative backing rhythms blend in seamlessly with the already existing patterns, all in all creating an astonishing laidback interpretation. Rating: 8/10
Conclusion:
Alexey Selin is a man to look out for in the near future. His original mix of 'White Crystal' is a superb trancer with a spine-tingling melody and some great unexpected turns. D-Air's remix kind of misses the mark, but this is totally made up for with the awesome ambient mix by Update Project. A classy release which is well worth buying!
