Gareth Emery dons his GTR alias to bring us his latest track, 'Cops'. Trance with a twist is the flavour and the remixes come courtesy of Ali Wilson and George Acosta...
:: GTR - Cops :: Five AM :: FAM050
1) Cops (Original) 'Cops' begins simplistically enough, sporting a thick beat and sprinkle of easy percussion. The mood is changed quite soon though, as a rough and twisted bassline erupts and begins to groove along with a really funky riff. The track then goes through a long development phase, where techy sfx emerge, the sound thickens up and the lead synth is drawn in playing some long drawn out notes at first. This changes into a hook/melody and it really stands out. This is for two reasons - the melody itself is catchy anyway, but it is also played out by a very stark and penetrating synth featuring clear and defined tones. After a miniature breakdown and a bassless section, the bass comes back in just as the track makes an ultra slick and ultra smooth transition into a breakbeat section. This is an awesome part of the track - the flow and rhythm is kept 100% intact but at the same time a whole new sense and feel is conveyed. The contrast between the lead and the smooth synth pads playing a brilliant chord progression in the background is superb to say the least. With a surge of funky bass, the track kicks off again with a standard beat, and the synth pads make a welcome return shortly after that and join in with the rest of the elements which make up this wicked track.
2) Cops (Ali Wilson Tekelec Remix) Ali Wilson's remix kicks off with a beat which has a strong tribal feel to it due to lots of 'shakey' percussion usage. Things soon erupt though, as a storming techy riff is developed and just takes over the track completely with dominating surges of deep and coarse bassy notes. We hear lots of familiar elements in the mini breakdowns (those synth pads are back - mmmm!) which precede the 'main' breakdown. Here the 'Cops' melody plays its part. The lead instrument isn't as penetrative as before, it has a distorted edge to the sound to give off a more techy essence. Absolute madness kicks off as the track kicks back in - the lead instrument stabs out repeating notes and the bassy riff goes on it's dominating rampage again. Totally awesome!
3) Cops (George Acosta's Pistol-Whipped Remix) George Acosta has produced something here that is slower and funkier, but that also retains a bit of a techy edge to it, thanks to the rough lead instrument and lots of techy sfx and hits strewn about within the track. There is a big difference in the breakdown though - a totally new and very trancey sounding melody is introduced, but this is replaced by the familiar 'Cops' melody when the rest of the track drops back in. Chunky and funky - a fun track.
Conclusion:
'Cops' is a tip-top release! Check out the Original for trance with a groovy twist but for raw, techy power, bang out the Ali Wilson Tekelec Remix!
