One of Captured Music's more recent tunes is a collaboration between label honcho Mike Shiver and Marc Damon. Mike Shiver also puts in his own remix and we see another coming from under Sun...
:: Mike Shiver & Marc Damon - Water Ripples :: Captured Music :: CAPTURED009
A: Water Ripples (Under Sun Remix) The Under Sun Remix of 'Water Ripples' is like a cross between driving, proggy trance and dreamy, breakdown based trance. The first three minutes see the track building and building - all the way from innocent beats up to a driving flow of thick, pulsating bass and smooth persistent pads in the background topped by some simple hooklines from a few leading synths. This build up ends at the breakdown, and this breakdown is an almighty 3 minutes long! It is indeed the centrepiece of the track, as we see the onset of ambient synths and sounds, soothing guitar melodies and strings lining each chord change. Slowly, synths take over from the acoustic and stringed instruments and begin to lay down some long and calming melodies. Eventually though, the track kicks back in to finish off with more proggy beats and that thick, pulsing bassline. There are a few new synth elements to add to the drive and progression, but some people, especially those who were expecting a melodic onslaught, might possibly be left a little disappointed.
B1: Water Ripples (Mike Shiver's Catching Sun Mix) Punchier beats and a much more active bassline makes Mike Shiver's remix much more lively right from the start. Like most tracks out there, the few few minutes slowly build the track up to strength, doing so by adding some nice, deep bass and using lots of lovely trancey synths to bring in ambience and backing chords. Going into the breakdown, nothing is being given away until the near silence is broken by a beautiful section comprised mainly of a wonderful piano melody and some backing strings. Some gentle acoustic guitar chords are thrown in to add that elusive sun-kissed essence, and just as you are hitting that state of bliss, a kick roll propels you into a passage of melodic heaven. This is 100% uplifting trance, fuelled by some gorgeous instruments and truly elegant chord changes and melodies. A fantastic track, which I think should've been the A-side of this vinyl.
B2: Water Ripples (Original Mix) The Original Mix of 'Water Ripples' is a deep and thoughtful affair. Thick bass chords make the sound rich and things are topped with some calm and clear guitar chords. These feature heavily in the breakdown, as does some excellent piano work. The overall sounds in this break are very fitting to the track's title. Everything is calm, clear and pure. The rest of the track showcases more of the cool guitar sounds, gentle synthwork and also the piano melodies, one by one, providing great variation but never overcrowding the track. Calm, mellow and lovely to listen to.
Conclusion:
Definitely a release for trance lovers to check out. The Under Sun Remix leaves a few desires, but Mike Shiver's remix more than makes up for it. Fantastically produced, it features some simply beautiful sounds, instruments and melodies plus it's joyously uplifting to boot. The Original is also very nice, with almost a chillout vibe to it for those calmer early sets, or sun-rising chillout times.
