SvD's 'Punk'd' makes a welcome return to Oxygen Recordings. This time though, it comes in the form of the winning and runner up remixes from SvD's "Pimp My Track" competition! Remixes come from winner Sean Tyas and runner ups Nortek and Fabio Stein...
:: Sander van Doorn - Punk'd (Pimp My Track Remixes) :: Oxygen Recordings :: OX014
A: Punk'd (Sean Tyas Remix) There has been lots of tracks popping up lately with Sean Tyas' name on them. He's putting out some great work and his name is getting more and more popular. So now it looks as though his work has been good enough to beat the huge number of entrants to the "Pimp My Track" competition.
Sean's remix retains some of the feel of the original track - deep and dark yet pumping and compelling. It is driven mainly by strong beats and a dual bassline comprised of soft, deep notes and a rough, grainy bass synth with lots of raw power in it's sound, playing a funky little chord progression. There's a great double change of style during the breakdown. First is a calm, deep synthy section and this is followed by a short but very sweet breakbeat section which features a wicked sounding electric guitar melody. One climactic buildup later and you're thrust back into the main track with the beats pounding, bass chords driving and sfx tickling your ears. This remix is certainly a very strong piece of work and is definitely worthy of being the competition winner.
B1: Punk'd (Nortek Remix) The Nortek Remix has definitely been fashioned with the original in mind. Deep and sinister basses keep the track rolling and very distinct percussive elements keep a lot of energy present in the high end. One this that really got me moving in the early stages of this track were some very good and innovative uses of the percussion and sfx. There are some great little touches which are very interesting to listen to and serve to really spice up the track. Nortek's remix is quite progressive in nature from here on. Once things have built up, you hit a long breakdown which sort of simmers for a while in a mixture of sfx, techy synths and "Punk'd" samples. After the track drops back in, you get a good few minutes of full quality, full on, fairly funky yet deep and twisted techy trance.
B2: Punk'd (Fabio Stein's Rolling Funk Remix) The name of this remix gives a fairly good indication of its overall direction. After a rather long percussive introduction, allowing for the percussion, big beats and sfx to strengthen and build up, the main track kicks right in. Fat funky basslines are the name of the game here, and you won't be able to help but groove to these funky sounds. Most funky house is around 130BPM, but this is nearing 140BPM, which is invigorating for funky house, so keeps everything feeling fresh and lively. The breakdown sees the introduction of a synth which seems to be a cross between something you'd find in house and something you'd find in tech trance. Its long and stark notes play out over the rest of the production and serve very well to keep the energy levels up before allowing the track to begin to wind down.
Conclusion:
A quality piece of vinyl here which contains some excellent remixes, of which all are worthy winners of the "Pimp My Track" competition. Nortek's remix is deep and dark, whilst Fabio Stein puts in a funky styled remix. Sean Tyas puts in some top drawer tunage though with his driving and energetic remix.
