Belgian trance maestro DJ Fire returns on one of Bonzai's mighty sublabels to deliver a release that is once again co-produced by none less than Laurent Véronnez aka Airwave. This has been getting plays from all over the trance scene, so let's dig a little deeper into the matter!
DJ Fire has been around for years, producing together with the likes of M.I.K.E., Dimitri Dewever and of course Airwave. His singles 'Religion' and 'Summermorning' got some great support, and it looks like things are looking much of the same for 'The Closest Thing To Heaven'...
A: Trance Mix As with earlier DJ Fire productions, it is instantly noticeable that L-Vee has been turning some knobs as well while producing the tracks reviewed here. And boy did it work out! This mix is the perfect example of a warm, soothing trancer, filled with silky percussion, smoothly polished basslines and an overall sunny atmosphere that makes you cringe for more. Delicate melodies spread all over the build, which also incorporates great bits of classy guitar chords to create an enchanting, totally joyful vibe. The main guitar riff reminded me of a combination of Coldplay and Junkie XL, somehow. It's really soulful and definitely succeeds in keeping you focused all through the nine-minute journey this track stands for. A fantastic tune which is in my opinion one of the best tunes to be released in 2006 thus far. Rating: 9/10
B: Electrance Mix This interpretation does things in a slightly tougher, more raw way. It relies upon a samey structure as the one introduced in the Trance Mix and also uses the melodies in an almost identical way, but in another way the 'electro' part that comes forward in the title is also very imminent. The use of a typical bouncy bassdrum and arrays of subtle electrifying SFX are being fueled onwards by a dark, buzzing bassline, which certainly adds to the different feel were being treated with here. If you hoped for a slighly rawer version of the other mix, this is your pick! Rating: 8/10
Conclusion:
DJ Fire and L-Vee have again shown that their collaborations are a guarantee for succes; 'The Closest Thing To Heaven' is a massive, massive laidback trancer filled with great melodies and a percussion as smooth as a brand new silk towel. It'd be a shame if you didn't get this. Out soon on digital download.
