One of A&B's most recent singles has been revamped by the boys from Signum on one side of the disc, while the flip ontains a housey Ian Carey remix. Read on to find out whether they're worthy remixes...
'Can't Sleep' is one of the singles from Above & Beyond's artist album 'Tri-State'. The original and Moari mixes were released on a separate vinyl, with these remixes following up a few weeks later. I know I'm a bit late with the review, but it's just that one tune on this vinyl is totally worth talking about...
A-side: Signum Remix Production-wise, it's been a bit quiet with the Signum boys. Apart from the What Ya Got For Me 2006 / Supersonic vinyl, we haven't seen many productions flying out from them over the past few months. Luckily, they are totally back in business with this massive remix! It seemed like they were going the more techy way with their most recent singles, but that's definitely not the case here. Right from the start, you'll notice that this is going to become quite the kick-ass tune. 'Can't Sleep' has been remade into a fierce, super-energetic trancer, filled with tough beats, a huge amount of drive and a smoothly rolling bassline. Signum have done some superb work on the melodies as well. During the build, this constantly repeating yet utterly effective, slightly emotive lil' riff goes on and on, breathing out a very distinct elevating feel. It's there all the time in a really subtle way, but it's that sophistication that makes it work so well. The breakdown relies heavily on the vox, with that smooth tiny riff continuously teasing at the background. The climaxes are of the harsh, uplifting type, making use of the main lead constantly to maximize the effect. A gorgeous remix! Rating: 8,5/10
B-side: Ian Carey Dub Mix And now for a remix for you house-freaks out there. Ian Carey brings us a nicely flowing interpretation in his typical style, filled with big raw basslines, high pitched bits of synth and lots of wicked mini-climaxes. This is food for the dancefloor for sure: them b-lines make the tune a catchy, really phat affair, with arrays of simple yet well working backing synth doing their thing spot-on. On the other hand, I haven't found many elements of the original in there, apart from one vocal bit near the beginning. I guess it was kind of hard to remake a trance tune into a houser like this one, but a bit more effort would have been nice. Rating: 6,5/10
Conclusion:
As you might have noticed, the Signum remix is what you should get this disc for. It's a big-room trancer filled with lots of energy, plus that amazing melody that sticks in your head for ages. Ian Carey made an ok house remix, but it doesn't really stand out from the other contemporary house, plus it doesn't really feel like it's a remix of 'Can't Sleep'.
