The summer usually doesn't bring you that much music, but when it does there's always some outstanding tuneage available. 'Arisen' has been caned by the biggest jocks for months now, having been released just a while ago on Armada. Airbase is up for remix duties under his Parc guise...
Laurence Rapaccioli is the one responsible for Arksun, as well as guises like Hidden Logic and Luminary (together with Ashley Tomberlin). Being a sound engineer for years now, he has been focusing on producing singles as well as remixes. He's remixed lots of artists on labels like Anjunabeats, Lost Language, JOOF and Selective, and his single productions reach as far as back to 1998. Fast forwarding to 2006, he returns with quite a blast with 'Arisen', which has been put on Armin's A State Of Trance 2006 compilation as well...
A-side: Original Mix 'Arisen' grabs you from start to end. Commencing with a deep, mysterious intro stuffed with dark soundscapes and delicate vocal bits, it soon becomes a full-fledged driving affair with its neatly stabbing array of basses and crunchy percussion. It isn't your standard tune at all; its structure is well-arranged, very subtly bringing in cumulative, rapid bits of melody to get things going, yet retaining a very special feel which comes forth through the very soulful feel the track breathes. The breakdown is downright astonishing; slowly, a charming, tiny melody playing this amazingly sweet rhythm appears, becoming a beautifully crafted piece of music eventually. It's just totally mouthwatering! A nicely accomodated lead riff fits in like a charm, making the climax one of those you'll listen to with a smile on your face, just because of its sheer ability to work on your senses a bit. Truly a fantastic piece of music!
B-side: Airbase pres. Parc remix Jezper Söderlund has remixed 'Arisen' using his somewhat darker Parc pseudonym. A massively dark, throbbing bassline grinds its way through the tune without remorse, creating a very interesting contrast combined with some of the original's melodies. This interpretation is raw and rough edged, combining a bit of tech and lots of vicious sound effects to become a meaningful whole. The main part of the original's breakdown has been implemented in a more moody atmosphere, sounding just a tad sharper and less on the foreground than in the original. What really stands out in this remix is the cool discrepancy's between the different parts: for instance, at the end of the break you're being treated a very elevating riff, while just a tad later the tune bangs forward like a steam locomotive using industrial stabs and that deadly bassline. A very interesting remix.
Conclusion:
This is just a damn great release. Arksun's original mix is a very soulful tune, with its superb melodies, inventive structure and nicely worked out climaxes. The Parc remix does things totally differently, but it works out like a charm. Available on every vinyl/download shop!
