Vincent Kriek brings us the third single under one of his harder guises. Kompressor stands for fierce dancefloor material, brought to you using thick tech influenced soundscapes. Digital Trance belongs to the Bonzai familiy and is Vincent's own label. Click in to get a view of what's up for grabs here.
Last year saw the release of 'Black Onyx', which was quite the monster track backed with that badass Green Martian remix. The follow-up that's being reviewed here has been released as the third offering on Kriek's Digital Trance label, which as you might have guessed from the name relies on digital downloads instead of physical vinyl.
A-side: The Hunter This tune is all about a blazingly fast drive, raw, eerie atmospheres and thick techy beats. Right from the start, it stampedes onwards using industrial, rapid sounding percussion, devilish sfx, all being backed with multiple arrays of stabbing, badass synth to generate a really tough and above all vengeful feel here. It's not your usual 'techy' tune; instead, it takes on a slightly deeper approach with its thorough buildup and constantly evolving riffs to maximize the effect later on. The breakdown is totally off the hook: silence appears at first, but then mania starts to break loose using a full fledged beast of a riff! Going on in the rather unpredictable style we have heard during the build, the track rumbles onwards using phat climactic interludes, creating havoc all over the place. If you want a track to scare your crowd in a positive way, go for this one! Rating: 8,5/10
B-side: Other Planets This one does things in a lot less fierce way than its A-side companion. It relies on subtle electro'ish influences, initiated using rough bassy stabs and a rolling badass bassline to give the tune an overall spooky, dark feel. Again, were treated with them trademark mysterious Kompressor synths: they make their appearance every here and there in a very subtle way, yet they do shine out a very distinct, eerie feel. For the rest, 'Other Planets' is all about creating a groovy, pumping feel: it doesn't really include melodies, but instead takes you on a bit of a funky ride using its fierce returning bassline and nice drive. Rating: 7/10
Conclusion:
'The Hunter' is a massive tune. It slams you right in the face with its sudden climaxes and raw riffs, making it a dancefloor pumper like no other. 'Other Planets' can't measure with it, but does have its own unique style by creating a nice, typical groove throughout its length. Available on all major download stores by now!
