Tom Holkenberg, aka Junkie XL, releases his 4th artist album. It seems JXL has reverted to the more guitar based sounds of his first two albums so let's see what it holds...

'Youthful' takes you on a lovely vocal trip, driven by half breakbeat, half 4/4 style beats and some pleasent guitar melodies. It has a soft and warm quality which eases you into the album really nicely. 'Mushroom' toughens up the sound with a full on breakbeat, characterised by thick snares and deep bass guitar basslines. Alongside some pleasant lead synths, a guitar puts out a catchy hook/melody which is now emphasising the acoustic essence which lies at the heart of this album. Now that JXL has established a range of sounds in the album, the rest of the tracklist expands into a mix of tracks which differ greatly in feel and emotion. Some are slower and lighter, others drive home a powerful and uplifting sound whilst others focus on the vocal element to tell a story or to change the focus of what you're listening to. Just about every track features fantastic guitar work, so definitely check this album out if you're into the acoustic sounds and flavours. The last 2 tracks chill the album out with soft, pad led sounds and strings with not much in the way of beats to be heard at all.

Conclusion:This is a really nice album. It has a commercial essence to it, but not in a bad way - commercial in the sense that this is something that you could find yourself hearing no matter where you were, who you were with or whose house you were in. It's very easy listening and will appeal in some way to quite a wide range of listeners, not just those into dance oriented music.
