Sandy Rivera has become the latest DJ to be welcomed into Renaissance's Masters Series fold. He joins a list of top quality DJs such as Deep Dish, Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Danny Howells and Nick Warren who have al put out a Masters Series album before him.
Sandy has taken his ability to play to dark and dirty dancefloors through to funky, soulful floors and laid this out over the two discs on offer here. We see this in CD1 as it is quite light, upbeat and funky with distinct housey and tribal flavours and lots of vocal tracks sprinkled around. CD2 is where things get dark and minimal, where the influences may be coming from Sandy's Blackwiz label, where he has been exploring these deeper sounds.
In brief, CD1 kicks off on a vocal tip where you can hear the voices of legends such as Joi Cardwell, Jamie Lewis and Soul Heaven. The sound progresses from light, vocal house through tribal and onto some smoother, mellow sounds. we hear the sought after DJ Gregory/Moloko mash up and some exclusive material from Sandy himself before closing with the rather cool 'Malteser Geezer'.
CD2 is inspired a lot by the sounds from the opposite side of the Atlantic with some very European styled music, noting Germany in particular as we hear tracks from Buick Project, Ame, Tigerskin and Rodamaal. The sound is very distinctly minimal and hence it draws in a very deep and dark feeling in places. This general gist is broken as the CD comes to a close where Sandy puts in an exclusive remix of 'Three Days', finishing off on a calm melodic and vocal note.
Conclusion:
Overall, a decent album if you're into Rivera's sounds. If not, then CD1 would still make for easy listening, whilst CD2 does get quite minimal and dark. That said, just about all the tunes are fine tracks, a lot seeing loads of playtime on the dancefloors at the moment and Rivera's mixing is spot on, making the CD even more enjoyable to those who have a DJing ear.
