The latest release on the label that is single-handedly defining tech trance is from an up and coming producer who is simply shooting to stardom with a recent spate of excellent productions and remixes - Maori...
:: Maori - Destruct / Toaster :: Oxygen Recordings :: OX015
A: Destruct 'Destruct' starts plain and easy with big beats and clear, rasping percussion. These few opening bars though are obliterated by the introduction of the track's massive, fat and powerful bassline. It just stomps itself down and surges onwards with a thick, booming sound. The track just ejects forwards and is immediately erupted into life. By now, especially after hearing previous Maori productions, you will have probably noticed that Maori's sound is very akin to a certain Sander van Doorn. This is by no means a bad thing, since it's a great sound, it's just worth pointing out how influential the SvD sound seems to be lately, especially to Maori. Anyway, the breakdown that comes around is dark and creepy, and when the track surges back to life it brings with it a techy synth which puts out a pulse of echoey sound every 4 beats. The style here also seems to borrow off of progressive trance too, creating a new kind of 'progressive tech' (???) sound. Because of this, there are no more developments and you are left to just ride out the techy essences until the end of the track.
AA: Toaster 'Toaster' actually possesses a sound which seems like it is more of Maori's own. The beats are powerful and carry a booming essence. The percussion is highly techy and carries with it a fine, staccato style which makes it sound more energetic. The phrases are interspersed with great little innovative 4 beat breaks which keeps the sound alive and your senses alert. Slowly, deep synths become apparent and soon the track is alive with dark techy sounds. The format is kept the same as this track's A-side cousin, with uninterrupted action both before and after the breakdown. The breakdown here is also dark and eerie, but the odd thing is is that nothing distinctly new is offered after the track drops back in - you're just left to get on with the driving techy flow.

Conclusion:
A very strong release here from Maori with two through and through techy tracks. They might seem a bit too samey for some people, but these should go down a strom with the fans of tech out there.
