Russian trance hotshot Dmitry Almazov aka Bobina delivers his first release on the HCR imprint as an EP, containing two interesting tunes titled 'Go Get Vodka' and 'Russian Dream 2006'...
Since the release of Bobina's first album 'Catchy' back in 2004, things have been going quite the rapid way concerning Dmitry's career as a producer. He has become Russia's main trance export, signing releases on respected labels like Deepblue and Maelstrom. Now picked up by trance giant High Contrast, Dmitry brings us two tracks filled with typical Russian 'influences'...
A-side: Go Get Vodka As you might know, vodka is Russia's main export when it comes to alcoholic beverages (or perhaps even when it comes to everything, who knows). 'Go Get Vodka' is a fast-paced, very friendly sounding trance number filled with punchy, funky basslines, lots of joyful, almost happy sounding melodies and a good few hints to vodka consumption. This is definitely not your usual stuff: in some way, it illustrates an amazingly full sounding atmosphere, delivering lots and lots of different melodies wrapped up in a coating of well fitting synth. The breakdown encompasses introductory piano melodies playing a cozy lil' melody, but the real deal starts when a rather massive main riff comes up, pumping out an energetic feel-good melody along its way. Some might typify this tune as a bit cheesy, but in some way it works out greatly. I really like the overall vibe that flows through the track, especially when concentrating on them neat melodies that somehow have it in them to generate a smile on your face instantly. Nice work!
B-side: Russian Dream 2006 I haven't heard the original of this one, so instead I'll just concentrate on this 2006 mix alone. Compared with its A-side counterpart, 'Russian Dream' has a more imminent groove coming with it, accentuated greatly by using a pounding, raw bassline which pumps its way through everything without remorse. Again, the melodic structures here fit in seamlessly with eachother: everything just flows really well, going on in the tradition of 'Go Get Vodka' by shimmering out a rather delightful vibe. A tasty piano guides us along during the first bit of the break, playing some infectious chords along the way. Huge amounts of tension are being built up just before the chunky bassline hits in again together with some of the riffs, generating a cool climax. At times, this track seems a little chaotic because of the use of so many different elements, meaning that sometimes you lose track of what's actually going on. Anyway, the productional quality is of a very high standard, resulting in a more than decent B-side.
Conclusion:
Bobina shows his productional capabilities in a very nice way with the two tunes on offer on this EP. 'Go Get Vodka' is a very full sounding trancer with a very happy vibe shining out of it, mainly caused by the funny 'vodka SFX' and use of wicked melodies. 'Russian Dream' is a bit more funky and groovy, but also includes lots of well crafted melodic parts. If you're in need of something a bit different, go give these tunes a listen!
