The latest release from trance veterans 4 Strings is 'Mainline'. This one, which comes in 2 flavours - Original and Turntables - is seeing action from all the big hitters - Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Eddie Halliwell and Judge Jules are all caning this one...
:: 4 Strings - Mainline :: Liquid Recordings :: LQ065
1) Mainline (Turntables Remix) This Turntables Remix sports quite a dark and menacing intro. The beats are thick and tough and these are supported by a growing rumble of bass in the background and a really infectious backing rhythm which acts as a strong driving force for this track. Practically the entire first half of the track is a constant build - the sound keeps on growing, the percussion gains prominence and that backing rhythm makes it easy to listen to and ride along with. The breakdown is used to introduce a simple melodic hook, which is made very effective by its well placed notes and the slippery smooth synth which is used to play its notes. The coupling of these trancey notes with the addictive and essential techy rhythm when the track breaks makes this a 4 Strings classic and definitely one of my favourite 4 Strings tunes.
2) Mainline (Original Mix) The Original Mix of 'Mainline', quite surprisingly, also has a darker and menacing feel to it. It also has a much crisper and upfront percussion line which is highly noticeable right from the start. Added to this is a regular stab of echoed synth which has a lonely and ghostly feel. All this dark and moody feel is nicely offset though by the addition of a gentle, rolling bassline, a repeating bassy synthline and some glisteningly sweet pads. The dark edge is further removed later on when the 'Mainline' melody kicks in. The synth has a coarser, more classic 4 Strings sound to it and makes this one of those "Hmm this is definitely a 4 Strings track" type of track. Because of this, it really seems to leap out of the well planned and structured breakdown and just bowl along happily, exuding uplifting, classic emotions onto the dancefloors. Lastly, there is some added spice here too. Towards the end, the lead synth is revamped a bit, putting out a much more exciting sound, something quite nice and different to squeeze that extra bit of energy out of a crowd.

Conclusion:
Overall this is another quality piece from 4 Strings, who seem to be putting out something better and better with each release. This kind of consistency cannot be sniffed at. Two very enjoyable records, check 'em out!
