Recover strikes hard with another brand new release on their Discover label. This time around resident producer Greg Downey steps up to provide a new track, backed with a remix by Giuseppe Ottaviani vs. Marc van Linden. Confirmed plays come from Armin van Buuren and Above & Beyond, so let's see what this little gem is capable of...
Greg, who was born in Ireland but lives in the UK nowadays, has been DJ'ing for over six years. Last year, his tracks 'Cued Recall' and 'Shaker' were picked up for immediate release on UK trance giant Discover, the label with which he still resides as we speak. A collaboration with and a remix for John O'Callaghan followed soon later, as well as a well received single release titled 'K.I.A.'. His third outing reviewed here has been gaining lots of attention during the past few weeks, most notably receiving plays from Armin (Tune of the Week) and A&B in their radioshows.
A-side: Original Mix The Discover label has always had a unique trance sound, stepping away a bit from the standard by delivering effective, no-hassle tunes loaded with pretty melodies. 'Vivid Intent' aligns with this description quite neatly; it's is a powerful piece of driving, no-nonsense trance, blending Downey's recognizable percussional patterns with a dense, pushing bassline and multiple arrays of well defined melodies. As the track progresses, it more and more shows its melodic capabilities by showcasing tiny, delicate chords which bring about a totally elevating feel along the way. The overall sound is warm and above all very smooth, a thing that is accentuated greatly during the break when the main riff comes around the corner. It's really gentle and calm in one way, but on the other end it encompasses a highly uplifting vibe which works out to great extent. Somehow, it floats through the track in a really subtle way, yet it retains all of the power that is necessary to make this a stand-out trance production.
AA-side: Giuseppe Ottaviani vs. Marc van Linden Mix Italy vs. Germany here, with one half of the legendary NU NRG duo making a remix together with German trance hotshot MvL. This interpretation has a significantly harder, rawer feel coming with it. Using strong, pounding beats and crunchy bits of synth, and unleashing a darker, deep b-line along the way, it makes its way through the build using bits of melody taken from the original in quite the nice way. The delicate sound from Greg's original is thrown overboard a bit here, making place for more shallow yet stronger versions of all the melodies used. The dancefloor potential of this remix is very high though! At its peak, it gets rid of all the melodic elements and instead bangs its way onwards using techy, filthy stabs backed by that powerful percussion. Luckily, the riff returns in its fullest form just a while later so we can enjoy the maximum effect of Giuseppe and Marc's interpretation. Quite the nice patch on the original!
Conclusion:
After releasing 'Exactly' by O'Callaghan & Kearney, one of thé trance anthems of the year, Discover has another winner under its belt with 'Vivid Intent'. It proceeds in a comparable style, bringing classy melodies and a totally uplifting peak-time feel. The remix on the flip serves as a nice addition as well with its rougher approach and slightly techy elements. Make sure to get familiar with this one, since it most likely will be played a lot during the coming months!
