After 2 EP's on the Big & Dirty label the 3rd is just released. Are the tracks on it just as 'big and dirty' as the ones on the other EP's? Read on to check it out.
Benjamin Bates is known for his big room housy tunes that just have that special sound. Examples of heavy bombs from the past are 'The Manimal', 'Whole', 'Off' and ofcourse the major hit 'Locked Up'. Let's see if the tracks on this 'EP' are from the same quality.
A1) Benjamin Bates- Backtracking
Backtracking starts off with a firm beat, a low dirty bass and some really cool cuts of the sound of a 'formula 1' car. A break follows fast and before you know it the track explodes as a heavy synth with a great drive comes in and brings the bass and car sounds back with him. Total dancefloor mayhem guaranteed! After a while a piano is being introduced to bring some rest after all that violence. With the piano a same climax is being built up as in the beginning of the track what has to have the same effect on the floor as before. Then the bassline takes over for a while for some needed variation. Later the piano makes it's return to create a last big climax. After this the track builds off with the bassline and just makes you wanna scream for more. Superb track, surely one of Bates' best!
B1) Benjamin Bates- Pure
Pure starts off some deeper then Backtracking and gives some kind of trancy feeling. Especially when short 'almost-hardtrancy' stabs come in. But with the laidback house beats it gives a cross-over feeling. Later in the track catchy basslines take it over and are being used to build up to a melting pot of all the sounds which were already in the track. After this has occured the track builds off very long on a way that track does not gonna bore you. As a conclusion I can say this is a nice track that can be used very good to build up an energetic set with.
Conclusion:
Well, Mr. Bates has done it again! A dancefloor destroyer on the a-side and an unique cross-over track on the flip. And as the title of the EP is 'End Of Beginning' I surely can agree that Bates is rising and rising.
