Oliver Prime is bringing us some more of his unique sounding easy going tech trance...

:: Oliver Prime - Hesitated / Blown Cover
:: Oxygen Recordings
:: OX016

A: Hesitated

'Hesitated' immediately has that distinct Oliver Prime sound - it's unmistakable. Steady kicks and light percussion are paired with a slightly funked up bassline and a gentle, non-invasive synth. The synth has a simple sound and feel to it, and it plays a meandering and simple sounding melody which kind of snakes up and down, around and inside the track. Whilst this melodic weaving and winding is taking place, string pads rise calmly from within, thickening the sound until you reach the breakdown. This is also quite spectacular in a musical sense as it is excellently and expertly blended in with the preceding sections. Minor chord changes can be heard and some really chilling choir voices hum out some ghostly notes. The melodic element is carried on throughout most of the breakdown - it is a more constant push than a large uprising of energy and when the rest track comes back in this push just keeps on going steadily, allowing the melody to flow and entwine itself into the rest of the music. Most of the best elements of this track are held within its many superb subtleties. It's a beautiful and moody track which needs to be properly listened to to be enjoyed to its highest potential.

AA: Blown Cover
'Blown Cover' is quite different to Oliver Prime's usual style. It has immediate drive - a potent, rolling bass gets things moving right away, and an early piano puts across essential melodic undertones. From here on it is a slow, building progression up until the breakdown. Here, there is a transformation. The piano is back (it actually reminds me of an Eminem track initially) and the rest of the track falls away and allows this piano to expand into a wonderful melody. It is then re-enveloped by bass and beats, but as the rest of the track drops back in, the piano continues to play a delicate, intricate and ornate melody. There are wonderful harmonies and contrasts between this piano and the perfectly tuned and driving bassline. The track carries an earnest and compelling feel to it and also a special intelligence which really defines it and makes it stand out.

Conclusion:
Two quite unique tracks here. 'Hesitated' is more of the usual Oliver Prime style, deep and moody with lots of great subtleties, whilst 'Blown Cover' is more like a work of art with the astounding piano work and fantastic musical contrasts. Not a release to miss out on.
