More action on Reset Records this month sees more dirty techy beats coming our way. This time though, they're from two of the scene's deadliest tech producers - Mac & Mac...
:: Mac & Mac - Rippen Base EP :: Reset Records :: RS023
A: Rippen Base (Scott Mac Mix) The intro of thick techy beats and tribal inspired rhythms set the scene well for the rest of this track. They bring on the onset of an early break which features some really eerie sounding wavey synths and some massive snare builds. This then drops into, well, what can only be described as ripping bass. It's deep, it's totally filthy, you can feel the grinding cuts of the bass notes and it just drives its way into your mind. It progresses by throwing in a whole shedload of techno-style percussion, mainly hi-hats and cymbals and such. This moves on later by adding a more rounded lead synth which plays a bit of a hookline before you're subjected to more bass then percussion, and then the end of the track. This will appeal mainly to tech fans or techno fans, but get this on a big system and it'll rock the floor no problem.
AA: I Feel It 'I Feel It' is quite a different track. It has lonely beats, again with a tribal percussion, but nothing as heavy as 'Rippin Base'. Eerie synths and sfx come and go as this dark feeling track builds towards the break. A strongly sung and sampled "I Feel It" vocal is warped and cut up into something synthlike during the dark and moody breakdown which eventually breaks out into a section which is led by a strong, cutting synth which plays a stabbed out rhythm. The vocals come back in and the beats increase in strength, putting the emphasis on the entire 'feeling' rather than any present melody or particular sound. As the track moves on you do seem to notice the tribal sounds much more clearly. Quite a strange, moody and atmospheric track. I think with this one, you'll either love it or hate it, there'll be no middle ground.

Conclusion:
A strong techy release here from the two Macs, Scott Mac and Mac Zimms. 'Rippin Base' is definitely a favourite with its massive bassline and huge drive whilst 'I Feel It' is much more "out there" and requires a somewhat open mind to begin to appreciate its merits.
