M.I.D.O.R.S.'s latest EP is a four-tracker which can be found on the currently rather prolific Five AM label. Check out this rather cool quartet of tunes...
:: M.I.D.O.R. - Recognition Series EP Vol. 1 :: Five AM :: FAM059
1) Shallow 'Shallow'' is no such thing! It is a slow paced, deep affair featuring soft, rhythmic basses and long, drifting chords. An engulfing, eerie atmosphere is created by these chords and little snippets of synth which literally tickle the track with sprinkles of notes here and there. The crisp percussion is what drives this deep, moody piece, and later on a short section of quietly stabbed synths adds to the feeling of muted drive behind this track. Overall though, quite chilled and easy going.
2) Amuse Me These tracks really seem to follow on from their titles. 'Amuse Me' gives off a lively and jostling feel with its bright percussion and springy sounding synths. Add a deep, rolling and throbbing bassline plus some subtle off beat chord hits and you have one funky little loop on the go. And that's how this track sounds and feels - it's very loop based, quite like some of the more easy going techno. More synth chords and weird gargling vocals are used to build the track and keep it going. This is a great track because it feels hip and urban, in a way, and it just gives of a really enjoyable lively essence.
3) Moresome Mom We're hearing some rather different sounds from M.I.D.O.R. now, as 'Moresome Mom' demonstrates. This feels like some form of progressive, deep house. Again there are very subtle chord hits and an very lively sense coming from all the percussive elements. The main swing here comes from a deep and undulating bassline which is most satisfying! The break features some vocoded vocals and some ambiance, before things kick back in but with a bit more oomph and drive, hence keeping things really rolling - especially due to that bassline which is oh so funky!
4) The Radical (Bright Mix) 'The Radical' is probably the weaker of the 4 tracks on the EP. It goes back to 'standard' methods if you like, with a simple 4/4 beat and predictable progression. The funky house feel created here is broken up by a gentle synth-laden breakdown, but after that it's back to how it was before. An acceptable production but nothing groundbreaking or innovative.

Conclusion:
One of the best things about this EP is that the first 3 tracks will appeal to a large number of DJs across several genres. Add that to the fact that the first three tunes are all highly enjoyable anyway and you have more great tunage from M.I.D.O.R. and yet another recommended release from the team at Five AM.
