It's time for more material from Five AM and their collection of talent artists and varied tracks is being complemented once again, this time by a 4 track EP from Octagen...
:: Octagen - Collected Works EP :: Five AM :: FAM060
1) Nothing To Lose (Club Mix) This EP kicks off strongly with the Club Mix of 'Nothing To Lose'. The beats are punchy, the track feels active and the bassline has a nice energy to it. The first half of the track demonstrates some lovely melodies which are backed up by a smooth and comforting layer of pads. The second half sees the dreaminess replaced by much tougher, stabbing synths and an off-beat snare drum reminiscent of recent Fred Baker productions. The final touch is the way in which this tougher section blends effortlessly back into the soft and smooth melodious sounds of before, rounding off this track beautifully, giving it a satisfying feeling of completeness.
2) Nothing To Lose (Classic Mix) (7:24) The Classic mix of 'Nothing To Lose' is very similar in structure to its counterpart, but you instantly notice all of the new instruments in use here. The longer breakdown doesn't lead into a tough section though, this mix keeps to the trancey melodies throughout its course. Instead, you get several synths each taking on the melody in a different way. This creates a good overall effect. Some people might not agree with the choice of synths though.
3) Unsaid (Original Mix) (7:38) 'Unsaid' sports a tough beat with techno-style hi-hats and a deep, creaking bassline which has a mean edge to it. The track develops into something which is led by some strongly attacking synths, pushing out a clearly defined set of rhythmic chords. Extra oomph is achieved by that beefy bassline and a load of complexity is added by layers of synth which add to the overall melodic effect. Right near the end, just as you think the track is about to finish, the energy is re-injected with an unexpected passage led by gritty, bassy synths. A high energy tune with a great 'chunky' feeling backing it up.
4) Untold (Original Mix) (6:57) 'Untold' immediately feels much more laid back. The soft rolling bassline is topped by quietly supporting synths and pads but the main feature here is a top notch piano melody. It is full of all the right stuff - intricate little medleys of notes and grand, stepping chords. After the breakdown, the piano is upgraded to a full on synth which seems to spread the melodies on smoothly in a gentle and easy manner. The piano makes a welcome return to play alongside this for a while before you hit the rather extended outro section.

Conclusion:
A top notch set of tracks in this mammoth EP from Octagen. There are great elements of trance to be found in all the tracks, so this is one release which should be thoroughly investigated.
