There's much more to be heard from FiveAM. Next up on the list is the Winter Sampler 2007 which brings yet another 4 tracks from 4 different artists under the spotlight...
:: Five AM Pres. - Winter Sampler 2007 :: Five AM :: FAM061
1) Sergei Shkuroff - Sonar The first of the four tracks is 'Sonar' by Sergei Shkuroff. It is a slow building track but it carries a feeling of determination, mostly from the chunky beats and excellently created sfx. It kicks in with an awesome bassline. It's a filthy dirty, grinding sound which is accompanied by some spacey sounding synths which have much more of a 'twang' to them than a stab. They create a strong, dark feeling which is amplified with their combination with that wicked bassline. The dark, driving energy continues after the break but it doesn't make this track any less interesting - it just sounds great! The unrelenting menace of the bass and the synths will drive a dancefloor effortlessly.
2) Miikka - Sparkling Love Miikka steps in here with a change of scenery, going to the more classic trance approach. Active, rhythmic bass drives a soft kick and multiple waves of dreamy and airy synths, each playing with separate melodies. This track features a nice progression and relies on deeper melodies behind the chord changes, within the congregation of synths. An average piece of trance.
3) Evanya - Tribu Obscura We're swapping back to the tough stuff here. And yea, it's pretty tough. 'Tribu Obscura', as the name suggests, has a distinct tribal feel to it. This comes from the hollow/bongo style percussion and also some deep tribal "ooh ooh ahh" vocal samples too. This is a very forceful track, the beats are big and bold and the bass is a pulsing beat of deep, gut wrenching booms. The techno style hi-hats add to the already strong driving feeling and after the breakdown you can appreciate this track at its best. This track emerges to be not just tech-trance, but tech-trance crossed with much heavier techno. It's a great combination of styles and the result really appeals to me. Those after a much tougher trance experience should check this one out.
4) Flux - Stone Henge Again a flip of style for the final track on this already impressive EP. We're back in trance territory again, but this time the sound is more energised. The bassline is highly active and provides a lot of the track's life and energy. Some pads come into play, and although they are very 'safe' sounding pads without much innovation, they do play some lovely chords which add succulent melodies and beautiful flow to the production. The breakdown here is a dreamy breakbeat section to die for and we're also treated to another one of these later on. It's in these sections where most of the uplifting melody can be found. The following sections have less melody and more drive, making for an enjoyable contrasting experience.

Conclusion:
Overall a great bunch of tracks. My favourites have to be 'Sonar' and 'Stone Henge'. Sonar's strength and unique sound are awesome and Stone Henge's melodies are beautiful.
