Andy Moor and Orkidea team up for AVA Recordings' latest release which is shaping up to be a highly enjoyable piece of trance...
:: Andy Moor Vs. Orkidea - Year Zero :: AVA Recordings :: AVA003
1) Year Zero (Original Mix) 'Year Zero' comes into life when the bass kicks in. It's a unique sound - sounding almost plucked and perhaps effected with a lot of chorus. Either way, it's a groovy and rhythmic harmonious rumble on which the rest of the track sits nicely. You hear a lead synth, very much in Andy Moor's style, playing out a sparse and carefully thought out melody. The clean and glassy notes amble along, echoing beautifully around the track. More melodies come from a stringed style of instrument, again blending into the calm and gentle surroundings. The way the different melodic elements take it in turns works very well indeed for this piece and all this is topped off by some awesome work with ambient glassy pads and strings which are so subtle that you can hear them yet you're not quite sure if they're there. A refreshingly good track!
2) Year Zero (Orkidea's 'Metaverse' Remix) Orkidea's version of 'Year Zero' is much more upbeat. The bass has a more 'standard' sound to it, it's much more active and the pace is picked up. There are frequent stops, rests and breakdowns, all of which focus on some sampled vocal singing and calm, gentle surroundings. The main melody is there, this time played by a synth which is still clean and clear, but which also seems to stand out in the foreground of the track much more. The focus here has shifted from the gentle melodic to the more energetic.
3) Year Zero (Andy Moor's 'First Light' Mix) Andy Moor's remix is at a slower pace with a whole new rolling bassline. The vocals feature again here but they are skillfully sampled and contorted into interesting patterns and melodies. The main melody is still there and adds a great uplifting sense to the sections where it plays. This remix also features a more noticeable abundance of pads and synths in the background, giving this version a slightly more full bodied feeling, due to the extra synth presence.

Conclusion:
More good music from AVA here. The Original Mix works best I think, with the great combination of melodic elements, the super-subtle synths and that unique, groovy bassline.
