Prepare for something different! Man of the moment, Sander van Doorn, has taken his latest release, Grasshopper, in a totally different direction. Check it out and see what you think...
:: Sander van Doorn - Grasshopper :: Oxygen Recordings :: OX017
A: Grasshopper It's immediate to see that this is something different to the 'norm' when you take a look at who's playing this out. Top comments have come from the likes of Deep Dish, Hernan Catteneo and John Digweed. Yes this track is deep, very deep. It's minimal, and it's proggy. It reminds me a lot of what you hear on a lot of the recent Renaissance Master Series compilations and from the time before when minimal sub-genres were splitting off and turning into what we now know as electro.
The sounds are very clean cut, crisp and clear. The is clear purpose to every little tap, every knock and every sound. At a very leisurely 128BPM, the beats and bass plot out a slow and deliberate path to follow. Ultra-sparse percussion lines the way with precision and intent - a lot of the time it is these little clicks and pops which can really define tracks of this genre. Everything must be in perfect synchronicity. A simple and bassy synth is all that's used to lead the track melody wise, and even then, it's a simple riff which continues progressively and benefits from time to time from filters and the like.
This kind of music is to a very specialist taste, but this track in particular goes a little bit beyond that. It has that SvD edge - that little bit of magic that makes it stand out and appeal to perhaps more people than you'd think it should. Give it a listen.
AA: Grass-Hopper The B-side is a different story, however. Whilst faster than its A-side counterpart of similar title, its direction is completely different. The sound is deep and dark and it carries a very gloomy feeling along with it. Magnifying that is a droning synth which might be a bit too overpowering for some people. Whilst you can see where this track was trying to be different to the A-side, it doesn't quite match up.

Conclusion:
A lot of positive intrigue and curiosity is involved with this release. The B-side might not win any awards but the A-side of 'Grasshopper' is very well produced and is very catchy. Totally different stuff from Sander - some of it good mind, but I hope he stays true to the tech trance we've come to know and love him for. :-)
