Sied van Riel really is changing places - he's stepping up from his usual spot as remixer to bring us his first appearance with a production on Liquid. None other than Jonas Steur and Miika Kuisma are throwing down some remixes...
:: Sied van Riel - Changing Places :: Liquid Recordings :: LQ069
A: Changing Places (Original Mix) After some popular remixes in 2006 and early 2007, Sied van Riel is unleashing 'Changing Places'. A proggy monster on Liquid Recordings. This is quite a turn in style for Liquid if previous releases are anything to go by, but how boring the world would be if we knew everything at every turn! The track itself has a thick, dark feeling due to some really moody and ominous bass. The progressive feel is heightened by a growing presence of well placed almost ambient synths until the breakdown. Here, a compelling and commanding lead takes the reigns and drives the track home. It has a coarse, electric feel, so you're not subjected to any of the typical proggy xylophone onslaughts that are very common in recent tracks. The end result is a well constructed track which has enough oomph and drive to keep you interested whilst still retaining that flowing and continuous essence of progressive trance.
B1: Changing Place (Jonas Steur Remix) More surprises here as Jonas Steur puts in a very downtempo remix at 132BPM. The instant thing you pick up here is the housey feel. The percussion is abundant and very prominent and the lead synth has that kind of 'electro plucked' sound which you will hear in a lot of housey styled music. There are some string pads which play a simple melody over the track from time to time, but when it comes down to it, this one seems to lack real depth and may just be a bit too 'out there' for some peoples' tastes.
B2: Changing Places (Miika Kuisma Remix) Miika Kuisma gets things back to speed though with a remix which features quite pokey beats and a lively, chattering percussion. The instant winner is the bassline - deep and rough with a real dirty electro sound and also a killer rhythm to boot. The is integrated brilliantly though with a whole host of progressive synths and sfx which swirl around and get filtered in and out seamlessly. The breakdown is surprisingly dark and doesn't give anything away until a new lead is introduced. This lead brings yet more inspiration and along with that bassline, adds a wickedly funky edge to things. A brilliant piece of remix work by Mr. Kuisma!

Conclusion:
Something refreshingly different for Liquid this time round - the Original Mix is up to Sied van Riel's high standards and Miika Kuisma has brought in some great twists and excellent touches on the flip for one of the remixes.
