Low key producer Kimito Lopez is showing a lot of activity on the Five AM label at the moment. First up is his 4 track 'Santa Monica' EP and his latest release, 'Nostalgia' will follow soon...!
:: Kimito Lopez - Santa Monica EP :: Five AM :: FAM063
1) Santa Monica (Beach Mix) The first track on this 4 track EP is a smooth and gentle piece of music. Kimito has focused on the blend of sounds created by the soft basses and rounded kicks, uplifting Ibizian chords and that sun-drenched acoustic guitar-like synth. It is indeed very relaxing and the subtle backing synth riffs and even subtler pads just allow this track to flow right on by in a truly easy-going manner.
2) Santa Monica (Club Mix) The Club Mix of 'Santa Monica' has a bit more bite behind it. The kicks are punchier, the bass has a definitive drive to it and the percussion is crisp and lively. After the 'acoustic' synth has played its part in the breakdown, a club-suited synth begins to tear up a path on this production. Whether it needed this addition you decide, but it does feel as if it stands out just a bit too strongly. But it's a Club Mix so it just does exactly as it says on the tin...
3) 83 '83' picks up the pace - it feels much quicker with a nifty, groovy feel behind the bassline and a buzzing sense of electricity coming from some of the backing synths. After the breakdown has been used to introduced a melody, the track beefs up with extra bass and pads and then gets stuck into its melodic elements. Things are kept quite simple here, but this is a positive factor as there is a certain classic sound and feel which is present. There is also an unexpected breakbeat interlude later on in the track which spices up the latter stages quite nicely.
4) Kimito Lopez Vs. Octagen - Something With The Stars Producer Octagen steps into the picture here alongside Kimito Lopez to co-produce 'Something With The Stars'. This one begins as a light and dreamy production with glazed synths and light, gentle sounds and sfx which add a spaced out and open feeling to the track. The tables soon turn though as a fat, trancey riff stirs from beneath and erupts out of the breakdown. A nice twist sees this powerful synthline slowly and gradually fade gently into the background, leaving the track to finish, lightly and calmly.
Conclusion:
A collection of really decent tunes here from Kimito Lopez. We know there's more on the way from this guy on Five AM and we're pretty sure it's at least just as good as what we've heard here.
