Satoshi Tomiie has been hard at work within the scene since the late Eighties where he appeared in a collaboration with Frankie Knuckles right up until now with his work on his own Saw record label. He has always managed to maintain the balance between the deeper and mind bendingly atmospheric sounds with his own soulful root, creating that Satoshi Tomiie sound.
It's no wonder then that Renaissance have asked him to mix the 9th incarnation of their Masters Series. The resulting mix is made up of house favourites old and new, new found talent and more eclectic contemporary styles. We can also see Satoshi making an appearance in the tracklist himself, with a co-production under his Opus Ink alias with Audiofly.
CD1 seems to kick off on a more housey tip, but it soon begins to unravel into something much, much deeper. Atmospheric and minimal sounds combine with hypnotic looping tracks to form something which can be as chilled out or as thought-inspiring as the listeners desires. There's an outstanding melodic uprising towards the end of this disc which keeps you enthralled and really wraps up the first half of this compilation.
CD2 simply goes raw and minimal. This is a unique blend of tracks which form one big journey made up of some of the most minimal house I've heard - yet there is still a sense of depth achieved here. A lot of the tracks can really trip the mind out because of their minimal style. This is the stuff that'll keep an after-afterparty rolling way beyond the deepest and darkest hours.
Conclusion:
Another strong addition to Renaissance's Masters Series. Let's face it though - nothing less would've been accepted! A testament to his style and talent, Satoshi certainly deserves his own notch in the Masters Series hilt.
