Here's the latest artist album from the DJ who needs no introduction... Tiesto.
:: Tiesto - Elements Of Life :: Nebula Music :: NEBCD9015
Some people love him and some people hate him. Some people just love to hate him. Whatever it is, you can't escape the phenomenon that is Tiesto. Brief highlights of his career, which started in a murky club in Belgium in the early 90's, include a definitive set at ID&T's Innercity in 1998, a world renowned 'Magic' series of sets, some awe-inspiring 'Tiesto Solo' events, heading up the opening ceremony of the Athens Olympics in 2004, winning the DJ Mag Top 100 Poll 3 years running, just a couple of sellout concerts (including a 200,000 strong audience in Brazil, January 2007) and not forgetting the production of some of the biggest tracks in trance history along the way.
That's some CV. But onto the album...!
Tracklisting 01. Ten Seconds Before Sunrise 02. Everything (Feat. JES) 03. Do You Feel Me (Feat. Julie Thompson) 04. Carpe Noctum 05. Driving To Heaven 06. Sweet Things (Feat. Charlotte Martin) 07. Bright Morningstar 08. Break My Fall (Feat. BT) 09. In The Dark (Feat. Christian Burns) 10. Dance4Life (Feat. Maxi Jazz) 11. Elements Of Life 12. He's A Pirate (Tiësto Remix)
The album kicks off with what, I think, is one of the best tracks on the album. 'Ten Seconds Before Sunrise' has a dreamy melodic flow, which is amplified by the buoyant synths, nicely rounded bass and stark, contrasting vocal snippets. Half of the tracks here have a featured artist on the vocals. First up is JES on track 2, heading up 'Everything'. This too is a smooth and flowing piece with synths to melt the mind and haunting vocals to scintillate your ears.
From here the album gets a bit deeper and darker with 'Can You Feel Me' (Feat. Julie Thompson) and 'Carpe Nocturn' (which has slight hints of 'Flight 643' contained within). Melody returns with track 5, 'Driving To Heaven' and in particular with Charlotte Martin who brings some wicked chorus vocals to life in 'Sweet Things'. Track 7, 'Bright Morningstar' is another favourite pick for me here because, once it gets going after the breakdown, this sumptuously deep track has a super-infectious mellow feel and a great melody backing it up.
BT and Christian Burns put in some male vocals with 'Break My Fall' and 'In The Dark' respectively, for a couple of real 'Marmite moments', if you see what I mean. But then you get the awesomely pumping and powerful 'Dance4Life', featuring the rapturous lyrical mastery of Faithless' Maxi Jazz. Finishing up the album is the title track, 'Elements Of Life' and finally Tiesto's remix of 'He's A Pirate'.

Conclusion:
Again, a lot of people would have made their mind up about this album by the time they finished reading the 'Tiesto' part of its title. However, if you do manage to maintain control over yourself and haven't heard this album yet, at least give it a try, because there is a lot of talent locked away here in a lot of these tracks which, like it or not, deserves to be heard.
