© Functional RecordsFunctional Records are going wild about their 50th release. Wild enough to put on a whole host of celebratory parties and a special compilation to mark this big occasion in their history...

The Release
A: Spoon Wizard - Shoe Monkey (Tom Real Vs. The Rogue Element Remix)
B: 5th Suite - Una Funker (Will White Remix)

In June Exeter-based Functional Records turn 50 and to celebrate this land-mark achievement of spending the last nine years supporting local artists as well as releasing music by some of the biggest and best names on the breaks scene Functional have drafted in two heavy-weight remixes from their back catalogue from label artists Tom Real V The Rogue Element and Will White.

First up Tom 'n' Rogue, two artists who have taken then breaks world by storm dissect Functionals second ever release from Exeter artist The Spoon Wizard. ‘Shoe Monkey’ was perhaps the biggest release from the very early days of the label, with it’s choral-vocal and deep, progressive beats immediately creating a splash on dance floors across the globe courtesy of big support from the likes of Rennie Pilgrem, Hybrid, Tayo and DJ Hyper. Fresh from storming this year’s Breakspoll with Best Remix (both) and Best Producer (The Rogue Element) The pair destroy ‘Shoe Monkey’ in a blaze of bashment-infused breaks and beat and some bowel – loosening bass.

On The Flip Devon-local Will White (ex Propellerheads y’all) takes apart his favourite release: ‘Una Funker’ from Italy’s 5Th Suite. ‘Una Funker’ (Fun038) was released in 2004 and featured as part of a four-track EP from by 5Th Suite and DJ Rocca, two of Italy’s leading purveyors of the breakbeat sound. Since his days in The Props’ Will has been continuing producing big fat party beats as well as DJ’ing across the globe taking the party with him, wherever he goes. Here he and adds a large portion of party-style beats and funk on his mix making this release an excellent 12”.

Tom Real has been involved with the club and label since the tail end of the 90’s, becoming resident whilst at University and later on producer for the label, having shared the last 10 years of the clubs history Tom has also compiled ‘Functional’s Finest Moments’ for the label. Italian-based-in-London Plaza De Funk is fast becoming one of the hottest new artists on the breaks scene. His remixes and production have graced some of the scenes coolest labels including Functional.

Upstairs will see one of the leading ladies pushing the breaks / house crossover Janette Slack alongside up n coming talent – Little Jo, WeHateYou and Andy Symonds.
