Airbase's only solo production EP we've seen this year hit Intuition Recordings with a bang, making an immediate impact...
:: Airbase - One Tear Away EP :: Intuition Recordings :: INTU908
A: One Tear Away The beginning of this track is quiet and understated, but this is for a reason. Gradually the muted beat and meek bass give way to a rising pad which itself grinds everything to a halt as would happen when stopping a record on a turntable. This is the cue for the production to totally take control. A rich bassline, chattering percussion and a medley of synths and pads instantly dominate. You get early tasters of the melody before you get to the breakdown, which is nice, since a lot of tracks leave things a bit bare for too long. The breakdown in 'One Tear Away' is grand and orchestral. It starts with a grand piano playing a wonderful passage of chords and melody, backed by some big orchestral drums and snares. Soon a choir is joining in and strings rise subtly from the background. From here a powerful and commanding synth rises up and takes the melodic lead and continues to do so when the magnificent bassline kicks back in. The melody itself is quite long and winding, adding to the epic and wide open feel this track seems to give out. These last sections of the track flow with an effortless elegance and the atmosphere remains grand, stately and uplifting throughout.
B1: Rest In Peace 'Rest In Peace' is a slower, deeper track. Dark chords, a thick, very deliberate bassline and a quirky synth add to the deep, and mysterious feel. What is noticeable about this one is that it seems to feel like an actual song. The lead synth draws out the notes in such a fashion that it's almost like words, but in a different language. The melody changes during the breakdown along with a nice change in the chord progression - always in-keeping with that song-like feel. The idle melody and deep, synthy sounds make this a calming, relaxing and very intriguing piece to listen to.
B2: Medusa 'Medusa' is faster and more energetic. It has way more drive, but feels a little forced due to the synths which force themselves out during the beginning of the track. Structure is gained after the breakdown because things are simplified and the giant trance synths have now adopted a catchy melody which fits in nicely with the driving bass. Seems a bit forced but the second half is nice once it gets going.
Conclusion:
The focus here is clearly on 'One Tear Away'. It's a track which exhibits orchestral grandeur and uplifting melodies in a totally exemplary manner.
