Katana is ready to present his fourth release on the reformed Jinx Records. Check out these two mixes in the tried and tested Katana style, but with a little bit of a different edge...
:: Randy Katana – Session Impossible :: Jinx Records :: JINX004
1) Session Impossible (Snair Mix) 'Session Impossible' is quite minimal in nature, but again that's how Katana's style seems to be as of late. There's still the fat beats and highly distinctive bass that we're used to - in fact the 'twanging' bassline is quite reminiscent of the almighty 'Fancy Fair', which is bound to catch the attention of a lot of listeners. What this track seems to benefit from is the inclusion of a rather small but strangely powerful electro style sound effect. It's like a periodic chirp but it adds a new line of character that seems to fit in nicely. Since electro appears to be reaching out to tech at the moment, it seems natural to blend some of these elements together. Finally, in true Katana style, there is a massive climactic breakdown which features a whole load of snare drums and the addition of some extremely wild phaser effects. These effects continue after the drop creating a frenzied stint at the end of the track.
2) Session Impossible (Progressive Mix) The Progressive mix of 'Session Impossible' seems to lean more towards the electro sound rather than progressive. The same sounding beats and percussion are there, as is that electro chirp, but the bassline has been revamped into something with a lot more body, so the sound is more whole and fulfilling. Because of this, the track also seems livelier and has a kind of spring in its step. The breakdown loses the snare drums and gains an airy, ambient sense. The crazy phasers are back again and help to maintain the frenzied feel as the track beats its way out to a close.

Conclusion:
A kind of bridging electro-tech offering from Katana. There's no denying his trademark sound - whilst not always showing that much innovation, it always gets a crowd jumping. The springy, lively feel of the Progressive Mix is enjoyable so definitely one to check out.
