The second of the trio of vinyl samplers showcasing tracks from Menno de Jong's quality new trance compilation 'Intuition Sessions Vol. 1 - South Africa' highlights productions from Mulika (a new project by Cliff Coenraad) and Yarune...
:: Intuition Sessions - Vol. 1 Vinyl Sampler 1/3 :: Intuition Recordings :: INTU909
A: Cliff Coenraad Pres. Mulika - Escalate This alias of Cliff Coenraad seems to aim at the deeper, more progressive and thoughtful trance rather than the stronger, techy influences we've heard from him before. The most striking thing here is the beat pattern - it has a lot of off-beats as well as the normal 4/4's. It's not a breakbeat by any means, but there is a distinct rhythm being created by the kicks, which is very different, and very interesting. The initial stages see a thick, bassy synth leading in terms of melody but this soon graduates into a two-piece ensemble with a much more highly pitched and delicate synth tapping out notes daintily into the vast, airy soundscape being created. After an ambient breakdown, the high synth evolves further, playing longer, more winding melodies which allow you to just drift away and enjoy the deep and calming mood that it generates.
AA: Yarune - Airballoon (A Dreamer's Guide) The track by Yarune is much more standard in nature, but don't let that detract from the track itself. It too is calm, deep and melodic - obviously fitting in with the general mood created for the 'Intuition Sessions Vol. 1' compilation as a whole. A gentle bassline, soothing pads and a sustained, hypnotic lead melody all add up to what is a decent and enjoyable piece of trance. Nothing groundbreaking, but it will make you thirst for more.
Conclusion:
Again another fine set of tracks for which to sample the album. A full review of which is coming very soon, so keep your eyes peeled!
