The DJ Session One Interview
Hi there Dirk, Thanks for taking the time to do the interview with i:Vibes
- Firstly, tell us a bit about yourself, such as where you're from, a bit about your influences, and likes in life
¥ i am 32 years old now, i come from Karlruhe in Germany, near Frankfurt. i have been DJing for 16 years now, and have been following the development of electronic dance music. I was able to teach myself between 1995 and 1997 to produce trance & techno which I do now. And in 1997 DJ Session One was born. (Release No. 001 on Blutonium Records "Dreams in my Fantasy")
- You own and produce under your Blutonium Records Label.. How has that been for you and how did that start up?
¥ After a bad experience with a label from Stuggart, i decided to market my own production, and that was the birth of blutonium records. now after 4 years, it is a platform with over 60 releases, on more than 5 million compilations worldwide, and we call it now "Blutonium Media" - (www.blutonium.de). but believe me, it was a very hard way, because you have really to invest your whole everything, and it is so a big risk, can destroy you completely, but I went through with it anyway.
- The releases on Blutonium have been seen as an 'allround' approach to dance music, covering all genres from Trance, Techno to House and have played by anyone from Scott Bond to Blank & Jones. Is Blutonium going to remain that way, and how do you describe the sound you personally produce?
¥ Good question! - I think we can describe the sound as an own "BLUTONIUM" sound, that is i think the reason, why it has been growing and growing, because it is a own sound, and not a copy of something. that was really important for me to create a trademark and also an own sound, so you are independent and you have your own customers, which start with you to grow with your music. i got e-mails from all over the world, and we see, how many people now listen to our sound.
- Do you support the idea of mp3s and mp3 mixing? as this has been a growing trend in the past 2 years
¥ no, but i think to promote tracks over internet by mp3 is a good thing, but a real fan, need a vinyl, because it sounds diffrent, than an mp3.........
- Who would you rate as the most talented DJ and talented producer in the world
¥ oh, this is not so easy for me to answer, because here we have some really talented producers, like: Ferry Corsten, Armin van Buuren, Tiesto, Lange, Paul van Dyk, Moby, and many more......
- Your favorite own production? and your favorite production in general?
¥ I like all my productions, because i done them for myself, so its hard to decide which one is the best, but my new single "Can you hear me?" was last week signed exclusively to Edel/Germany, will be for sure a massive hit, because we mixed here a male voice, sounds like the depeche mode singer, with a very UK trancy arrangement like Lasgo. Edel want to market it very massive in the German Radio and TV. We will see, if also Edel/UK is releasing it in England or anywhere else in the world.
- Any particular artists you want to work with?
¥ Oh yes! one time in my live, i want to produce with Moby a project like Moby meets DJ Session One, because this guy is so talented, and we will have for sure a lot of fun, because i think that we are really similar.
- Tell us a bit about upcoming productions and releases from you
¥ Here i can say, that we changed the Blutonium sound a little bit at the beginning of this year. we are producing harder now, because we really want the whole crowd this year. we have five new "killer" records: D.J. VIRUS - all your bass (BLU-041), NORMAN DJ - go back (BLU-042), ANAMORPHIC - dream (BLU-043), BLUTONIUM BOY (thats also me) - brainshooter (BLU-044) and San Francisco's bad boy of Trance THOMAS TROUBLE - the rael hardcore (BLU-046), also produced by myself. (BLU-045) DJ Session One - can you hear me? is as i told you before under exclusive license to Edel/Germany.
- How'd you get to become label boss and key producer of Blutonium anyway?
¥ I think that after 13 years practice as a DJ with every week two gigs, you recognize the knowledge that you got and also that you are a part of special scene. after i saved a little bit money, i had the chance to start, because you have to pay upfront for your first three vinyl releases to the pressing company, and this is a lot of money. also you have to find a distribution company, which likes your sound, and then the next step is to have success with selling the record. i had luck, the first releases sold very good, a lot of compilation requests, and here the label was born. I saw i can go on, and this is the reason, that i manage now this growing worldwide company. it is like a game, like monopoly.
- Great advice for those who are thinking of starting their own label. Anything else you'd like to tell us?
¥ Well, in personal terms, my wife Dani is having a baby in June, and i hope that she and the baby will be in good health after the birth. i am so happy at the moment, you cannot imagine, because to see, how you big love is getting a baby, it is unbelievable..........smile......i will be a papa.......a dj papa......that's the reason of blutonium boy........ =)
Thats it from DJ Session One aka Dirk Adamiak, who has just given us a very nice and imformative interview. For more info on Session one, keep an eye on i:Vibes, or check out www.blutonium.de
